I was at a party/get-together last night and the sub 2 attempt got brought up (no one at the party was a serious runner, admittedly I'm not either though I used to be, but there were a few casual runners).
They were all talking about it and I mentioned that it wouldn't count for a WR and explained one reason was because of the rotating group of pacers. One guy asked "Oh why does he need pacers, why can't he just use his phone for that?"
I tried to keep a straight face and explain that the pacers were there to help block wind, etc. and then the guy was like "Oh of course that's cheating! No wonder it won't count."
Just a reminder that we all here on Letsrun live in a bubble in terms of the amount of running knowledge out there.
This is what I tell running friends all the time when they complain about people who are not runners.
I use the following statement over and over:
We are a minority. You may think we are not be cause you have many friends who are runners. But of the 300 million people in America, we are less than 3 million. I'm not talking about occasional joggers, but those of us who go to local races and race, and run more than 3 days a week.
Here are some examples of statements from family members and people at social events to me;
When are you going to stop this running thing, it's not good for you!
Runners are gaunt, skinny, unhealthy.
Is the Boston Marathon as far as the NYC Marathon?
Why don't you just pick it up the last few miles?
If I ran a 5k on the track, I'd just sprint the first lap and jog behind everyone after that.
You got beat by a girl? That would never happen to me!
I know how far a 5k is, how far is a 20k?
Who are you trying to impress?
Why don't you wear baggy sweats, instead of skimpy shorts?
If I ran, I'd be much better than all the runners around here. I see them, and know there's no way any of them could beat me!
I was great at sports in high school. I could easily run under 5 minutes for one mile (says the guy 250 lbs.)
Those guys in the marathon look like they're jogging. I could do that!
