I was at a party/get-together last night and the sub 2 attempt got brought up (no one at the party was a serious runner, admittedly I'm not either though I used to be, but there were a few casual runners).
They were all talking about it and I mentioned that it wouldn't count for a WR and explained one reason was because of the rotating group of pacers. One guy asked "Oh why does he need pacers, why can't he just use his phone for that?"
I tried to keep a straight face and explain that the pacers were there to help block wind, etc. and then the guy was like "Oh of course that's cheating! No wonder it won't count."
Just a reminder that we all here on Letsrun live in a bubble in terms of the amount of running knowledge out there.

Oh and after I mentioned that there are pacers to break the wind, the guy was like "Oh that's totally cheating then. That's not as impressive."
-
He did made some point there, but is he even a runner? even a commited hobby jogger? then why bother with muggles, they don't know where the magic is at goddammit
-
I don't think so, based on their comments...

The subject of this thread made me LOL

I wish Kipchoge was texting updates and posting selfies like all the hard core Mary runners do.

What do you expect from a Nokia rep?

A constant supply of smelly farts in your face keeps you in a state of pure hate the whole way. -
Always knew you weren't a hobby jogger Bad Wigins... RealRunnersTM are born in a state of pure hate, while hobby joggers such as yourself merely adopt it...

Kipchoge did not phone it in.

obviously--but the bigger question is why ignorant people are so quick to express an opinion---

I cover high school sports for a living. I'm in a metro, and most of "my" schools are big-division teams, which in track/XC happen to be among the state's best - however, my coverage area includes one little charter school that competes against other little charter schools. At their meets, usually one or two guys break 6:00 in the mile. In some events, there may be one really good girl who does better than all the boys. Suffice to say, there is very little talent on display when I cover my charter school.
During the boys mile at a meet yesterday, this mom was watching and talking to her friend, and she was saying, "human advancement is just so amazing! You look back at Olympic runners even in the 60s and 70s, and you look at these kids, and the kids are actually running faster than the Olympians from a generation ago!"
Meanwhile, a kid from a school with a name like Fauntleroy Christian Collegiate Prep School for the Highly Gifted Sons of Italian-American Insurance Salesmen was winning the mile in 5:54.
The woman was clearly not entirely stupid, and rather articulate, as the quote hopefully shows. But she was so, so, so wrong on this point of fact, and I have no idea how she got the idea that these kids were better than Olympians from years past. One trip to Wikipedia would clear the issue up, yet here she was espousing her ignorance to her friend, who seemed ready to believe it.
But of course, we who know running probably have blind spots like this when it comes to other subjects.
I suppose this silly graph is apt:

This is awesome, and frightening.

It does make you think though. Why wouldn't he use his phone? He could carry it in his fanny pack.

You don't even need to buy a special one. There's one right on my fuel belt. I use it for all my marathons, even the short ones! -

Farting in someone's face gives them pinkeye. -
How do I know that you are a troll? Because no-body, except serious runner geeks and Nike folks, were talking about the sub-2 attempt. If you were at a real party, with real people, they would have been discussing anything BUT. Now, I appreciate that you invented your little vignette to make your point, but for your attempt @ making it seem like this was legit, you get a 1/10. Just not a believable story.
And yes, Letsrun is a bubble. -
That graph hearkens to the Dunning-Kruger effect.

(Some say this perfectly explains Donald Trump, but I think Trump actually realizes that he's not very bright and that this bothers him, so he lies and makes lots of noise instead. It's his staunchest supporters from the South and the Plains states who have no clue how ignorant they actually are.) -

This is what I tell running friends all the time when they complain about people who are not runners.
I use the following statement over and over:
We are a minority. You may think we are not be cause you have many friends who are runners. But of the 300 million people in America, we are less than 3 million. I'm not talking about occasional joggers, but those of us who go to local races and race, and run more than 3 days a week.
Here are some examples of statements from family members and people at social events to me;
When are you going to stop this running thing, it's not good for you!
Runners are gaunt, skinny, unhealthy.
Is the Boston Marathon as far as the NYC Marathon?
Why don't you just pick it up the last few miles?
If I ran a 5k on the track, I'd just sprint the first lap and jog behind everyone after that.
You got beat by a girl? That would never happen to me!
I know how far a 5k is, how far is a 20k?
Who are you trying to impress?
Why don't you wear baggy sweats, instead of skimpy shorts?
If I ran, I'd be much better than all the runners around here. I see them, and know there's no way any of them could beat me!
I was great at sports in high school. I could easily run under 5 minutes for one mile (says the guy 250 lbs.)
Those guys in the marathon look like they're jogging. I could do that!
