Graduation + Injury = Not the same team.
Two top returners from last year ( Schulist and Clark were 4th and 11th at Nationals) out for the year plus two 16:30ish girls (Serna and Lunau) were apparently dinged up as well. Plug those two in even between 40th and 50th and their a pretty comfortable 3rd. If they ran as well as last year, they're challenging Colorado for 2nd. Just one of those things. Everything went right last year, nothing went right this year. Ali Wiersma was a pleasant surprise. 6th girl last year and 21st at NC's yesterday.
Assuming Schlulist comes back healthy, team could potentially cotend for the podium next year. Schulist and Wiersma should be one of the best 1-2's in the country. Shelby Jackson has gradually improved and should be a strong 3rd. If they can get Serna and Lunau healthy, they could combine them with two of the freshman that red-shirted this year (Fuller, Weiler, Poe, Smith), that's a decent 7. That would allow them to redshirt the two freshman that ran this year because of injuries (Gram and Way) as well as their entire freshman class including Kettel and Bullough, which I know Drenth prefers.
The year after, they'll be all in with the HS classes of 2015 and 2016. Everyone I've talked to in the HS coaching ranks in Michigan say those are the classes with the most promise,
