I suspect this varies greatly depending on where you live. I live in northern MN and I've always felt that August 1 is the beginning of the end of summer.

I define summer as the MLB regular season.
Therefore, I would define the beginning of the end as when teams start to be eliminated from the playoff race.

I like this. Makes sense.
The day you get a real job is the last day of summer. Unless you teach.
Culturally, first day is Memorial Day, last day is Labor Day.
If you're still in school, first day is last day of school, last day of summer is day before school starts.
Officially, first day is June 21st, last day is September 21.
Its always been August 21 in our family. This is when we start canning fruit and putting meat on the dehydrator for winter storage. Usually the harvest is over .
Beginning of the end would be around mid August I think. It's still hot but you start making plans for fall activities. I'd say it's when your focus is no longer on summer but on the next season.

"Officially", the first day of Summer is either June 21st or 22nd. the last day is either Sept 20-21-22.
The first day of the end of Summer happens when you hear Bob Segar;s "Night Moves" and you literally feel Autumn closing in.
Workin' on our night moves
Trying to lose the awkward teenage blues
Workin' on out night moves
In the summertime
And oh the wonder
Felt the lightning
And we waited on the thunder
Waited on the thunder
I woke last night to the sound of thunder
How far off I sat and wondered
Started humming a song from 1962
Ain't it funny how the night moves
When you just don't seem to have as much to lose
Strange how the night moves
With autumn closing in

I see it this way.
But summer comes back when you have kids.
So the beginning of the end of summer to me is the week leading up to the first day back to school for them.
And they start back the last week of August.
