Like all track fans I have been mesmerized by Mary Cain since she had come on the scene. To clear up some misnomers. She hasn't been coached by a high school coach since her sophomore year in track and perhaps her junior year in xc. Salazar gave her workouts for her final two years in high school, but she did them under the eye of a friend of his. She ran brilliantly.
The last year has been a tough one for her. Like most college freshman she has had to make a lot of adjustments. Her times have not been too impressive which has many people concerned.
This is nothing new. Few athletes have made a steady trajectory from the age of 16 onwards. Mary Decker, the most celebrated middle distance-long distance runner of the 20th Century did not have an even career either. She made a national team at even a younger age than Cain. For a number of years afterwards she faltered, mostly due to injury, at least that was what was reported. Then she returned to splendor. Other athletes have had similar rises and crashes.
Nothing is a sure thing. I do hope that we will see greatness from her in the future, but there are many variables to consider. One thing for certain-She doesn't read the forums. At least, I hope that is the case.
