Not at all. By the time you can run as a child you have learned how to balance your trunk with minimal effort.

Also, since you have learned to run as a child with minimal effort, you should also stop all that silly training. Just get out there on race day and run those 26.2 miles. You were born knowing how to do it.
PTs and fitness trainers who want to take your hard earned money will tell you it's incredibly important even though most of the fastest marathoners in history do zero core work.Do you want to spend time doing other things when you're not running?Running takes up enough time....you also need a girlfriend, hobbies, nights out with buddies, etc.

I do core solely to look good. When I say "core" I mean the basic crunch circuit crap people do. A well rounded resistance training program would be better but I don't have regular access to a gym.

Not quite but you can do the silly training while using that same sense of trunk balance that you learned as a child. That's not the part that needs work.

Running does wonders for the core. I throw in some leg-lifts once a week to stay in shape for climbing and skiing, but that's it.

Sammy Wanjiru did.. He even spent days out with them as well.
