I quit running during college and since then have picked up guitar and piano. I make music quite frequently with the extra free time I have. Any others here who have picked up music before, during or post-running?

Yep, that's me. If you're trying to get back into running, it must be said that I always saw music and art as being an integral part of running. Something about running at its core at least partly contained music and art. Likewise, the rhythm and passion of running and the joys of the physical body are integral to music and art. I also believe that music and art has the potential to provide motivation/inspiration and guidance and structure to running training. I also have been working on some entrepreneurial ideas in those regards for awhile--some sort of training arrangements/groups; feature film production.
Finally, I appreciate the value that each, by themselves, have.
How 'bout you? What have either of them by themselves (and/or in combination) meant to you in your life?
Yes, started running competitively at age 13, started guitar at 15. Competed in college and also took music theory and composition classes. Now I'm 54, my playing continues to improve, my running performances continue to decline. Still having fun with both though!

I play guitar and song write, and sing in choir at school as I'm still in school and what not. I go through phases where I'm either writing a ton or I dont pick up the instrument for a week except to just strum a few chords.
I didn't start running until my 30s. I've been playing professionally since around 20. I play pretty much any instrument and have performed professionally as a drummer, bass player, guitar player and keyboard player. I still quite enjoy it but feel kinda burnt out right now.
some ongoing discussion in the linked thread
I'm learning guitar on my own - big challenge. Currently I am struggling to pick it up every day - need to get inspired again.
Former percussionist. Barely eked out a living for a few years as a freelance musician before going to law school. Have barely played since. Actually got into running as a bit of a replacement for music. Both have parallels in that it takes a long time to develop to a level of mastery. Lots of delayed gratification in the process.
I'm a musician (guitar/vocals) on the side...30 gigs a year, for about $4-5K extra cash. Not great money, but it's fun and covers one kid's braces or whatever. I've played the RNR marathon several times here in DC.
Recording and overdubing is really where the fun for music is.

So, that'd be a "no" to the question posed in the thread title.
I am an organist and I teach worship and music courses at a seminary. I like music, I like my faith, and it pays the bills. I haven't been running much at all, though. Knees been giving me trouble...
As was said, I am a piano player (mainly keyboards, not really pianos).
I started playing at age 5 and briefly considered being a piano performance major in college.
I have played in blues and rock bands in California, Maryland, Michigan, and Ohio.
At age 30 someone gave me an electric guitar and amp, so I started playing guitar. With already the background in music, I just needed to know the mechanics of playing the guitar, and it wasn't long before I was halfway decent. On guitar, I remain just halfway decent. I'm a much better keyboard player.
Been playing piano since childhood, although I've never taken the time to actually read music, just play by ear. I've "written" about 50 songs ......none about running though!
I love this, didn't know letsrun had such a diverse music group. I have give up running for the time being.. I got into music pretty sporadically (minus playing saxophone and trombone in middle school band). Does anyone here have music up on soundcloud or bandcamp? Im in a band who is signed by a label out in Australia and I also have a side project I work on from time-to-time.
Been running and playing drums since 1965! Still practice my chops 2-3 hrs a week, and can still crank out sub-22:00 5k's at almost 67 years old (when healthy!)
Me too. Never bothered to learn to read...all be ear. No regrets.
