I have been "hit" a number of times at stop signs in residential areas (at least 10, with many near misses). Drivers will look at the direction of oncoming traffic, see that they are good, and not think to look at the sidewalk in the direction of non-oncoming traffic...even though I am literally 10 feet from the driver, in plain view, not even peripheral vision. I would guess that people subconsciously filter out pedestrians as a danger in a crash, and only really realize it when I car is about to hit them.
The worst injury I got was a gauge in my calf from a license plate. All the other times, I put a hand on the hood and vaulted up. Fortunately, I now live in an area where there aren't residential roads every 25 meters. I wouldn't want to run those routes again, with everyone on their phones nowadays.
I will be "that guy," and say that (maybe by coincidence) all the times I have come into contact with a car, the driver was a woman. Take that however you want.
The closest call I ever had was in the winter. A town dump truck with side plows lowered a the side plow and the corner of the plow tore my jacket. It could have just as easily torn right through my body if I was a couple inches closer...as it was, I was way on the inside of the breakdown lane.
