We had a nice chat with Coburn today
In case you missed it, we talked to her coach yesterday: Mark Wetmore: http://www.letsrun.com/news/2014/05/mark-wetmore-talks-emma-coburns-big-win-jenny-simpsons-four-flat-future-holds-ben-saarel/
Too many words, too few pics.
she looked capable of 3'58 in shanghai if pace had been maintained 800 - bell
the record is basically 3'57-flat which means she does need to go 3'56
i don't see that happening
she doesn't have the basic 800 speed to go that fast, not yet having cracked 2'00 (albeit probably coud go 1'59 ) nor the sub-8'30 endurance
however 800 & 3k abiliy is not the final determiner as bernie never had any 800 worth bothering with but went 3'26 !!!
interestingly
a nice preim line of fit for her currently may be :
55.00 / 1'59.00 ->
2'32.4
3'58.5
4'17.7
5'27.3
8'30.7
14'52.5
31'37.5
some interesting marks she coud chase :
jacobs - 2'31.80
suzy - 2'33.93
slaney - 4'16.71
shannon - 4'20.34
slaney - 5'32.7
slaney - 8'25.83
shannon - 8'31.38
Well, I liked both the interviews; thanks LRC.
Cool that you guys have an "in" with Wetmore and his group. Hard to imagine Alberto and Galen responding to an interview request such as this one.
Jenny will be running the 800 soon. Hopefully she is running 4:00 off of basic conditioning and the next three seconds+ can come off of sharpening and racing.
Great interviews. Thanks.
Great interview. It takes great discipline to keep exact pace like that when you are all alone, it really is a testament to her training. Although, in the steeple there really is an advantage to being alone when you are going over the barriers. One of the most disconcerting things about the steeple is when you are in a big pack and are trying to get your steps right going into a barrier.

Did you watch the race?? She actually ran even splits through 1100-1200 meters and dropped the pace down in the final lap.

Wasn't she following a rabbit?
Yeah, I agree. People talk about Simpson's staying back as a tactic, but the fact is with her limited 800 speed she CAN'T run at the front of a fast pack because she would blow up. A 2minute 800 runner going out in 2:05-06 is suicidal. She has to go 07-09 so she can have enough left for her kick. Her lack of speed is also reflected in her last lap, as she often get dropped with 200 to go, only to come roaring back in the last 50-60, when it's too late to catch the leader. But she can (and has) gotten medals running the way she does. 3000 might actually be her best distance. Same with Rowbury who has the same 800 pr.

The rabbit went 1k. Last 2k Coburn was alone and increased her pace.
Look again wrote:Did you watch the race??
dumb question
She actually ran even splits through 1100-1200 meters and dropped the pace down in the final lap.
her splits from vid looked :
63-high
64-high
50-low
61.7 !!!
the 1st 2 laps were fairly even
from 800 - 1100 she ran ~ 50-low which is 67+ pace - pathetic 4'11 pace
she kicked in a blistering 61.7 !!!
that is 3'58 abiity at even pace from gun-to-tape
Absolutely, Jenny can break that. I would be surprised if she didn't this year. She'll be chasing Aregawi all summer.
Let me tell you something, Pre is gonna fricking fast. Sum is rabbit and she is an excellent rabbit for the 1500, very smart, couldn't ask for better. Obiri is all bold now that she wiped out Genzebe, so she will think she can challenge Abeba.
Another ventolin line! Let's put you on comedy central. Still think Genzebe is going to annihilate Aregawi all year? LOL!
since when does the current 800wc & undisputed 800 world number 1 act as a pacer in a 1500 ???
they paying her $10k to jog around in 2'06 & then drop out ???

Since she did it last year in Diamond League, and did a great job.
Yep, but may ask her to put up 2:02.
if she is going to act as pacer, with a world title under her belt she is likely to ask for ten-fold previous fee
you think anyone is going to pay tht ???

only a fool judges whole season form on an opener, especially after her epic indoor season
she said she coudn't explain what happened to her in doha
front-running a 3k in 95F heat may have had something to do with it...
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
