I'm having pain under my left butt cheek when running. It is very painful to try to run through, so I've taken about a week off and haven't tried running again since then. Could this possible be piriformis? I've read a ton of old threads about that (and they scare me, as it seems piriformis takes a long time to go away for most people) and have started strengthening my hip, back, and core since that's what most of those threads recommend. I have also started doing tennis ball massages in that area.
The pain started on Nov. 20 after a session of 1,000s on the track. It was my first time on the track in months after taking off several months for a metatarsal stress fracture. Oh, and my hip also started to pop every time I rotate it right after that workout and I'm still able to pop it right now. Could my pelvis possibly be out of alignment or something as well?
I think I may have developed a muscular imbalance during the extended time off from the stress fracture. I was so depressed that I didn't do any of my usual core work that I had been doing for the past few years.
In short, I'm basically wondering:
1) How long should I take off from running? Could I even possibly do easy runs (my usual easy pace is around 6:25-6:30, but I'd be willing to go much slower if it is advisable to continue to run)?
2) Am I approaching the problem correctly through strengthening exercises and stretching?
3) Any additional advice on what this pain may be? Anyone had experiences/similar pain?
I'm only 19 years old and really want to get back into running and training consistently again. Thanks for any help!
