A pretty bad week. My heel is persistently sore and is not getting better as I take more and more time off from running. Some nights I am awakened multiple times by severe calf cramps in the leg with the bad Achilles. I’m really hoping this is just going through a bad stage as it has before, but if it doesn’t get better soon I may be forced to take a complete hiatus from running for a while and switch over completely to the bike.
So I ran only one day this week, a 10-miler at just over 9-minute pace. That was on Wednesday. I spun the bike trainer in the garage on M,Tu, Th, and F, added 20 minutes of rowing on Th, and rode the bike outdoors on Sat (23 miles) and Sun (35 miles). I also went for a mini-hike of almost 2 hours on Saturday in a hilly open-space area about an hour from home. This was the start of getting myself and my dog toughened up for some serious day hiking and backpacking in the Sierras come summer.
lucKY2b, good job on getting in the “long” run and I hope you enjoy getting done with the semester! I have one more week to go, then finals week. Two weeks from now I’m all done…
Igy, nice AlterG session and I hope next week is better than you are expecting.
dhaaga, I hope that 10K was just a bad day. For some perspective, I would now be delighted to get within 10 minutes, not 5, of my best-ever at that distance!
Racerdb, I’m encouraged to hear that your heel is feeling better and that the size of your bump is going down. Mine has been huge for nearly 3 years, and the only time it seems to get smaller is immediately after a workout, either running or cycling, but it fills up again quickly over the next few hours. I’m just thankful that as a university professor no one gives me any crap about always wearing shoes with the right heel chopped completely out, thus taking all pressure off my bump. I still wish I could figure out how to chop out my actual running shoes so that they don’t press on my heel but don’t slide around too much on my feet.
I'm entered for a half-marathon next Saturday. Since I've already paid my money, I suppose I'll run if my heel doesn't feel too bad, despite the lack of recent training. After that race, though, I may have to shut it down for a while.
