As long as the same distance is run within some parameters, last runner to stop wins.
Anything like this ever take place?
How about combat running? Races with a degree of fighting allowed: are there such events?

I am confused by the same distance, last one to stop? That seems like it would be the slowest runner. I could see shuffling.
Sounds almost like "The Long Walk" one of the Bachmann (Stephen King) shorts.
Didn't you watch the 800 meter races at the Berlin WCs?

I don't know of any of these races either, but I always thought it would be fun to create something similar to roller derby on a short loop x-country course.
Not totally sure myself, but I'll try to explain.
I was imagining something like you can't go slower than a certain pace, or you can try and cover as much distance as fast as you like (the faster you go the less time it would take.) Even if you were exhausted and could not move one more step, in order to win, competitors need to cover the same distance plus one more step.
In brief, a run to exhaustion, even if very short say 1k. An Extreme short race. I suppose it is a perfect 400 by definition, but it would be great to see it edging out without the arbitrary distance set up, i.e. Run till you drop.
The origin of this mental T&F onanism probaly belongs to another set up: I was imagining a more cerebral race than just a flat out 600m between Bolt and Bekele.
He who holds his "top" speed the longest (i.e. not allowed to slow down) and cover more distance.
They are not allowed to slow down ever but can run a progression.
Who would win? Who would cover more ground?
the 800, and the 1500. This year's WC were pretty darned action packed. But not quite like swinging at each other tackling, falling and then trying to get up to cross the finish first.
Or perhaps, in the spirit of a gentlemanly sport, ending up running in zig zag or sidestepping to avoind being caught by a big powerful competitor.
Your idea sounds a lot like "The Long Walk" that someone mentioned earlier. It was a story about a yearly race where 100 18 year old boys would walk down I-95 I think, and couldn't go below 5 mph. No breaks. If you go below 5, you get a warning; get three warnings and you're shot. Every hour you can burn off one warning. The race continues until only one walker is left, and he gets everything he wants for the rest of his life. It's a pretty good story. You could pretty easily adapt it to hitting a certain pace-say, 6:00 pace, checked per mile, and obviously not killing the competitors.
Ta posters. Had not heard of this short story but will have to look it up. And you are right, it does sound adaptable to a running scenario, maybe with mandatory gps trackers which beep loudly when you slow down.
