Team Indiana Elite - post collegiate group formation

I thought Cabada was running for a group down south.

I find this kinda interesting, what with the Invaders being 45-60 mins up the road. Were there a significant # of post-collegiates who wanted to stay in Indiana and couldn't latch on with the Invaders, or..?

This group looks pretty good! Cabada really leaving simmons? I see Cabada has been struggling this year so far. It will probably be good to train with some other elites, instead of on his own.

Cabada has had a rough start to his year, he is fit but just not racing well yet. I think he may be a bit quick to jump the Simmons ship, as this is where he has had the most success. Guess that page article in T&F News about Bristol being the right spot for him is a crock of shit. Says he is supporting his family now, so why run when you have a good thing working for you already. I predict we may have seen the best of Fernando Cabada with that 2:12 debut.

what's up? why not just join the Invaders? Is Bob Kennedy supporting this club?

This seems kinda of counter productive. I wonder why this team and the Invaders don't work together (or hopefully they will). The Invaders have a good sprint crew and it seems odd to try to support two teams.Harger has ties to IU so I wonder if they tried to work together and it didn't work out or something like that?

I think given the limbo of VIC, this is a smart decision on the part of Fernando. Fact is, there is a good chance that Coach Simmons will not have a job there this fall. It is being said now that the school does not have the money to pay staff and faculty for the remainder of the year and has applied for a loan to do so and keep the doors open.

So Cabada runs for another group. Not a suprise. Will Fasil follow him there? Probably not. Where does Fasil end up? Probably in Flag with Jack Daniels.

I think it will be interesting to see where Simmons finally stakes his flag. I know he has a house in Western North Carolina. Perhaps coaching a private group down there will be in his future. He did it once before.

If not, his coaching resume is good enough to land a job at another school. Where is the question.

Fasil already lives in Flagstaff, but is coached by Simmons. I can tell you he will not leave Simmons. Fasil loves what Simmons has done for him. He went from running 14 flat to beating Meb.

Can you really call this a group? Haas hasn't broken 1340 and Chorney has lived on a US title over 6 years ago when Broe and Fam fell. They both graduated from IU and hang around still.

Why don't we have larger training groups?

We don't have larger groups because of people like you "group yes". People try and start them and instead of supporting them you call out all the current guys on the team and bash them. Instead of pointing out all the faults you could just as easily send 100 bucks to the program to help one of the athletes with expenses or travel and thus be supporting a group.

When you get more than 8-10 guys you start losing the individual coaching method. If you are scraping by trying to run professionally you don't want a coach who gives you a typed schedule, often times late because "they have 23 athletes to look after", with no individual thought into what works best for you as an individual. It would be like college where only a few guys get to talk to the coach because he is so busy with other athletes or flying all over the country to different races. Instead, you want someone who is going to help you make that next, and very difficult, jump to the elite level.

Secondly, it obviously becomes a funding issue. IU has taken a huge load off by offering free housing. Providing that for 8 athletes is awesome but they would be using up a lot of their dorms to support more than 8.

I think this group is great and I wish all the athletes who sign up th best of luck in achieving their goals.

That is exactly what I want. 23 teammates with the same goals. Coaches can't do that. Teammates can.

Why does it have to be viewed as some sort of turf war and not simply a case of the new venture providing an extended and alternative opportunity that complements the great opportunity provided in the area by the established Invaders? The Invaders are a true track club, affording opportunity in every single T&F discipline (save perhaps RW) whereas the Team Indiana group is distance only. That's just one key difference. Not better or worse, just different. An alternative. There is still a need for expanded opportunity for post-collegians in t&f and running, hopefully this one will have the staying power that others (some of the USATF Distance Project outposts) unfortunately have not. The only possible drawback I could see in this from an athlete's point of view is having to live and train in Indiana, where weather is pretty crappy for training a lot of the time. Probably not a whole lot worse than the Detroit area, though.

Is this a marathon group? Like Hansons. Or a track Group like out in Oregon? or a steeple group? like in columbus. I thought that the importance of a group is to help each other with training partners. Who is going to do hurdle drills with Chorney? Who is going to do @0 plus milers with Cabada? You can't have 3 guys all doing different things and consider it a group. It is currently 3 groups of 1.

Is the steeple group at Columbus an official thing? Or is it just olinger and huling training under gary, with rob meyers there on the side as well?

Well, with 3 steeplers they are already 3 times larger than any of the groups of one currently in Bloomington.

Really? Why would Chorny need someone to hold his hand while he does hurdle drills at this point? 75% of a distance runner's training is similar, they can all tempo together or do 1k repeats together, and some guys will just turn back earlier on long runs.

I was just wondering... are they taking other potential Olympic Trials talent level steeplers at Columbus? or is it just convenient for them to live close together and train together?

Excellent question. I was simply following the logic of a previous poster who indicated that the group was small so that a coach could give individual attention. My point was that individual attention does not a group make.
