psoas tightness 4/8/2006 1:34AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
When I do too much hill work or up my training....my psoas gets really tight. I've had a massage therapist tell me that my psoas has scar tissue in it. Is the psoas supposed to get worked hard and be tight? Or, stay relaxed? Ultimately it's a strong muscle for running?

I've had trouble with mine for years. If someone has also had trouble but has found an effective stretching and strengthening regimen (I've found it very difficult to stretch it...) I would greatly appreciate them sharing their knowledge.

Has anyone ever had a psoas tendon release? I screwed my psoas up pretty good and am scheduled to have surgery on it.

I do the lacrosse ball rolling 2-3x a day and feel like a new runner because of it. And I also stretch my psoas on each side twice a day for 2-4 minutes each time.

I didn't run for 18 years because of a really tight psoas. I started back running and in a short time, my psoas again went into spasms giving me debilitating back pain. That was in 2003. It was then I was told about the Julstro stretch mentioned above. It is a very simple stretch. After 6 weeks off and doing that stretch, I was able to run again and didn't have any more problems from my psoas.

I tried this with a broomstick handle. I found some website that explained how to do a psoas release using a broomstick and body weight. I don't know if it helped or not. I did get a good bruise, however. You could probably google it and find the website.
