Unbelievable: Fayetteville-Manlius Sweeps Boys’ & Girls’ Titles At NXN High School Team Nationals

By LetsRun.com
December 6, 2014

The greatest day in the history of F-M cross country. The greatest day in the history of F-M cross country.

Fayetteville-Manlius (NY) coach Bill Aris has been to all 11 editions of Nike Cross Nationals. It’s old hat to him, and with seven consecutive women’s championships from 2006 to 2012, it’s likely that some of the years have blended together by this point. There’s no chance he forgets 2014. On Saturday, his harriers accomplished something truly special at the Glendoveer Golf Course in Portland, Ore.: F-M became the first school to sweep the boys’ and girls’ team titles at NXN. In the boys’ race, F-M scored 111 points to outdistance runner-up Wayzata (MN) by 48 points. The women’s race wasn’t as close; F-M defeated second-place Great Oak (CA) (running as Temecula), 70-149, with their top four all crossing within four seconds of one another.

Individually, Tanner Anderson (Spokane, WA) pulled away late to win in 15:11 over Olin Hacker (Madison, WI) by two seconds, while Allie Ostrander (Kenai, AK) broke the field with around 800 to go, completing the 5k course in 17:19. Paige Hofstad (New Braunfels, TX) was second in 17:26.

Full results below quick takes.

QT #1: What F-M accomplished is simply incredible.

It’s mind-boggling to think that the two best cross country teams in the U.S. come from the same school 20 minutes east of Syracuse. F-M has a large, but not overly massive enrollment (1,577 students according to U.S. News & World Report) yet it produces dominant cross country teams year after year.

Four NCAA teams have swept men’s and women’s titles (Colorado did it most recently, in 2004) and while it’s very difficult to sweep titles, it’s almost impossible to do so in the high school ranks. F-M can’t offer scholarships and is limited to the students in its district. Coach Bill Aris’ legacy was already firmly established before the meet, but his latest accomplishment is one that may never be matched. Congratulations to the F-M athletes and coaches.

F-M benefited from some great pack running on Saturday. Its first four finishers in the girls’ race went 46-47-48-49 and all crossed with four seconds of each other (their #5 was only seven seconds back of #4). In the boys’ race, F-M’s #2, #3 and #4 were just three seconds apart. F-M could have scored fewer points with a better finish from usual #1 Bryce Millar (many expected him to finish in the top five and he finished 38th) but it didn’t make a huge difference as Millar still scored a relatively low 14 in the team score.

After the race, coach Aris was thrilled and talked about how the victory in the guys’ race was a long time coming. In his interview with MileSplit, Aris said:

Well how could I feel? My feet are off the ground right now, I feel great. I feel that our girls righted the ship and got us back on course after last year’s disappointment. And the boys got the job done. I waited 11-years for that boys victory with a lot of good teams preceding them and a lot of great efforts. This one was special. And it made it even more special with both teams winning so I couldn’t ask for more. … Good day, good course, good everything, couldn’t be happier. What is there to complain about? Nothing. … In terms of a double victory, how could anything top it? But again, I say that with deference and respect to all of our great teams of the past. They were all good kids, all hard workers and you know something, in an indirect way, everyone of those predecessors had a role in this thing because they built into it. And it goes back to our Stotans of 2004. Which, ‘Guys if you’re hearing me, God bless you, I’m proud of you. In the spirit of [Percy] Cerutty and [Herb] Elliott, we did it finally.’

It was still pretty muddy at Glendoveer Golf Course. There was enough mud at Glendoveer Golf Course for the Palatine (IL) girls to have a post-race mud fight.

QT #2: Moving the meet didn’t do anything to combat the mud.

For the first 10 years of its existence, NXN was held at the Portland Meadows horse racing track but this year it moved across town to Glendoveer Golf Course. When dry, the Portland Meadows course could be fast, but muddy conditions often led to slow times (the boys’ race was won in 17:08 in 2012). On the webcast, announcers Rich Gonzalez and Toni Reavis said that Glendoveer would drain much better and that the course was in good condition yesterday, in part because athletes weren’t allowed to run on the course itself and instead ran on the Gator path next to it. Footing would not be a prolem, they said. That was not the case on Saturday as many of the athletes interviewed said that the course was extremely muddy and that it could get slippery in parts. Still, mud didn’t seem to have any impact on the outcome of the race.

QT #3: The girls’ race was dominated by individual qualifiers.

Of the top 20 finishers in the girls’ race, only one qualified with her team (third-place Danielle Jones of Desert Vista High School in Arizona); down from seven last year. That’s the lowest total since NXN began allowing individual qualifiers in 2008 (previous low was five). It was a different story on the boys’ side as half of the top 20 qualified with their teams. That total could have been even higher if Summit’s (OR) Matthew Maton or Brea Olinda’s (CA) Austin Tamgno ran with their teams on Saturday. Instead, both opted for Foot Locker West (both qualified for nationals). It’s interesting that while most of the top individuals on the boys’ side opted for Foot Locker (some even to the detriment of their teams) NXN seemed to have several of the top girls individuals.

QT #4: Allie Ostrander looked great today despite getting upset in her regional.

Ostrander lost at NXN Northwest to Ella Donaghu (10th today) but she was the class of the field today alternating surges with Fiona O’Keeffe before breaking away in the final kilometer. Ostrander may have just been rusty at NXN Northwest as it was her first race in six weeks — she’s from Alaska, which runs its state meet on October 4. Ostrander ran 16:44 on August 23 and was still in great shape 15 weeks later. Props to her.

Article continues below player.

“This is a dream come true. Literally I had a dream about it last night,” Ostrander said after the race to Reavis, adding that the final hill almost broke her.

Anderson exulted as he crossed the finish line Anderson exulted as he crossed the finish line

QT #5: No one could hang with Tanner Anderson.

Anderson, who became the second consecutive athlete from his school to win at NXN (former teammate Kai Wilmot, now at Wisconsin, broke the tape last year), looked smooth and strong the whole way en route to his 15:11 win. Adam Barnard of Daniel Boone High (TN) tried his best to stay with Anderson, hanging on until the 4k mark. It was a brave move but Barnard paid for it later, as he faded over the final kilometer and collapsed just short of the finish line (he crawled across in fifth place).

Anderson, the only four-time NXN qualifier in the field, said before the race that he was initially unhappy that the meet moved from Portland Meadows as he felt he had an advantage having raced there three times before. But after thinking about it, he changed his mind and decided he didn’t care about the new venue. No matter where they ran this race, Anderson was winning it (he won NXN Northwest on a snow-covered course in Boise on November 22). The new course was hillier than Portland Meadows. There weren’t any huge climbs, but there were a couple of short, steep inclines in the final 400 that tested the runners’ strengths.

Anderson was so good today that it’s a shame he won’t be able to join a historically deep field in San Diego for Foot Lockers next weekend. One messageboard poster suggested the organizers make an exception and allow Anderson to run Foot Lockers (he had no chance to qualify as Foot Locker West was today) and we agree. In fact, why not make it so that the NXN champion automatically earns a spot at Foot Lockers every year? Foot Locker gets a better field and the athletes get to race the best competition. It’s a win-win, and there is a precedent: in 2006 (when NXN was known as NTN and had no individual qualifiers), the top two finishers at NTN from the FL West region were given spots at Foot Locker finals.

Anderson is undecided on a college (he told Milesplit he’d decide in late January) and is choosing between Washington, Wisconsin, Northern Arizona, North Carolina and Syracuse. Wisconsin would be an interesting choice — the Badgers are extremely young and Anderson would be able to join up with with HS teammate Wilmot and the guy he beat today, Hacker (son of former NCAA and USATF champ Tim), who committed to Wisconsin last month. Ostrander has yet to announce a college decision either, but according to Alaska Dispatch News, she had visits lined up to Stanford, Villanova, Boise State, Northern Arizona and either Oregon or San Francisco.

QT #6: Galen Rupp and Evan Jager were on hand to pump up the athletes.

Rupp and Jager took turn doling out high fives and sharing motivating words with the athletes as each boys’ team was introduced. It was cool to see the pros get excited for the high schoolers instead of the other way around. Chris Derrick and Alexa Efraimson were also on hand to analyze the races while Elliot Heath provided updates from the lead Gator and conducted post-race interviews.
