I'm hopeful that 1) it can be shown that there is very little chance of catching COVID while running a race outdoors. If that is the case, 2) then it seems like if we took extra precautions before and after the race running races could be held.
Amy I wrong on #1 and #2 being the conditions for races being held? Do race directors or anyone else know of studies being looked at in terms of #1?
I guess #3 could be that healthy people could just decide the risks is are worth it.
I can think of a lot worse ways, and told them studies seem to show very little outdoor spread of COVID. They said running a surrounded by others was different, but I got them to admit they really had no idea. And neither do I.
I don’t know anything either, but it seems like any studies done will take some time. It also seems like we need a lot of things to happen on a day to day basis before a race like Boston happens. Maybe those day to day things will be happening in most places two months from now, and then it will be easier to say what will or will not happen. So the only answer I have is that time will tell. We will have a better understanding in a couple months as to which direction the virus is headed. I’m not sure the argument of it being an outdoor race will work for some, even if the virus doesn’t spread well outdoors. We need local races to return before the bigs can come back. Once people in every state are getting hair cuts, eating out, back at work etc and there is no severe backlash, then the sporting events will return.
Bottom line, we won’t return to normal until a substantial portion of the population is no longer afraid. I’m thinking you can’t hold Boston with option #3 unless MA decides the risks are worth it.
