Toni Reavis has a couple ideas on how the Boston Marathon could be held this year and neither one has a lot of participants.
That prompted us to start thinking about if there are any ways for mass races to be he held until there is a vaccine. I'm hopeful that 1) it can be shown that there is very little chance of catching COVID while running a race outdoors. If that is the case, 2) then it seems like if we took extra precautions before and after the race running races could be held.
Amy I wrong on #1 and #2 being the conditions for races being held? Do race directors or anyone else know of studies being looked at in terms of #1?
I guess #3 could be that healthy people could just decide the risks is worth it.
On today's LRC conference call I said my plan for holding the Boston Marathon this year would be take extra precautions at the start, getting people to the start, and after the race. Space people out more when they are waiting for the gun to go off and then shoot the gun off and everyone runs the race. Maybe at water stops you hand out bottled water instead of water with open tops. Maybe you you have to limit the numbers so thousands can run but not tens of thousands. Who knows.
Robert and Jon were pretty livid this was idiotic. "I can't think of a worse way to spread covid."
I can think of a lot worse ways, and told them studies seem to show very little outdoor spread of COVID. They said running a surrounded by others was different, but I got them to admit they really had no idea. And neither do I. Robert said "What about the choir practice in Washington?" I told him that was an indoor event in one location which is very different. Also a bunch of mostly older people. My plan doesn't work out unless the science shows odds of catching it are very slim.
I know race directors are talking about this. Would love to hear how. Are any countries doing controlled experiments with young healthy people to see how this spreads? I forgot what that is called. I know some bioethicists don't like that idea but I've heard others argue society as a whole needs to know bettter how it spreads so it's worth it (in general not so we can have leisure mass participation races).
