It's now thought by some that smoking actually decreases your chance of Covid-19. For example, according to CDC data, only 1.3% of hospitalized patients have been current smokers that's about 10 times lower than the prevalence of smoking in the general US population. In France, only about 4% of the Covid-19 patients are smokers but 25% of the population smokes.
When this thing first started, all everyone was talking about was how China and Italy had higher rates of smoking than the US and that's why it was so dangerous there.
Updated. Heck, just two days ago, the FDA in the US warned, "People who smoke cigarettes may be at increased risk of infection with the virus that causes Covid-19, and may have worse outcomes from Covid-19.” But in France they are now studying the opposite.
I guess it only makes sense that people are now wondering if smoking may somehow help you. It seems like the one thing that is constant about Covid-19 is that clearly no one knows what they are talking about it when they present themselves as an expert.
First we were told this was no big deal. We should ride the subway in NYC and go to restaurants in China town in San Fran and definitely don't buy masks as they won't help. Now restaurants are closed and we are told to shelter in place and we are required to wear masks.
We are living in some crazy times.
Here is the article wtih the FDA stuff from two days ago.
Editor's note. Initially, the article linked to a DailyMail article but some wondered if that was legitimate so we changed the source.
