People here think running is easy and that a 20 minute 5k is easy. Yet, most Marines can run a 5k in under 20 minutes. How do you feel about that?
How do you feel that most runners can’t do more than 5 strict pull-ups? Or 50 pushups in a row?
It’s essentially the same thing.

Most HS XC runners can easily do those things

That Marines find running as easy as I do?
I would hope Marines were all sub 20 guys. They are supposed to get to action quickly, not hobbyjog to a conflict.
I made a typo. I said most Marines can't run sub 20

Highly doubt that. Most HS runners are 125 lbs and gangly. I‘d believe 2-3 pull-ups and 20-30 pushups at best for most.
Agreed. I knew plenty of collegiate guys that couldn't do 5 and 50. Certainly not with good form.
The guys should be able to.
I’m an old a** lady (late 30s) and I can run under 21...and am usually only 2nd or 3rd in my age group

Go out, knock out 23 pull ups and 87 + push ups, then run a 5k and see how you do. Chances are you wouldn't get past 5 on the pull ups. Then you might, might, realize theres more to fitness than running.
Physical prowess does not win wars, technology does.
This is anybody in general. Sub 20 is Much easier at a young age, but when you get older and have family obligations, work obligations and you put on a few pounds it is a lot more difficult.
Running is an example where the saying of "it is not too late" is bullcrap
"It's not too late" is bullcrap if you're still under 40 at least. There was a study that showed that max speed doesn't start to irreversably decrease until you turn 40. But it is harder to shed the pounds in your 30's for metabolic reasons but you can still run just as fast as you did but you have to run twice as much or eat a lot less...to fend off the "dad bod"...

My cousin has been in the marines for over a decade now and is an instructor in hand to hand combat. I highly doubt he can run close to 20 minutes. Every person I know that has served is in either poor cardiovascular condition or have expressly told me that me that the majority of servicemen are not good distance runners. I know there are people that are fast in the military but they are far from the norm.

On average, XC runners tend to have among the higher GPA's among high school sports teams and are probably more likely to go to college than the military, regardless of skill.
Good lord. A 20 min 5k Is very fast for an average person. Go look at most sub 20 runners. You really want a bunch of 125 lb sticks (mostly high schoolers) defending the country?
I hope most of you guys are actually just young and dumb and speculating on age etc. It sounds like a pile of excuses for poor performance.

But a very robust person can break 20 as well.
I'm 170 and half a century old and I can still run minutes under 20.
