The race started on drugs. It was an endurance race that was basically last man standing. They have a statue to Tom Simpson on the mountain where he ODd on amphetamines.
True. As late as the '80s (not sure when it changed), they didn't even kick you out of the Tour de France for a doping positive. They just penalized you 10 minutes. Just one example, Joop Zoetemelk (1980 winner) tested positive three times during the Tour de France (1977, 1979, 1983). In 1979, he still finished 2nd overall, even with the penalty.
