What are we doing wrong?
1. Inadequate testing/ contact tracing
2. the stockpiles created for pandemics weren’t replaced following H1N1
3. lack of coordinated federal leadership
4. population that is highly skeptical of leadership and doesn’t adhere to public health guidelines
5. underfunded CDC/ underfunded FDA
6. mediocre at best health care system
7. Massive amounts of disinformation and disease skepticism
8. Lack of social infrastructure including sick leave and unemployment benefits, that led to millions of people being forced to continue working.
9. Lack of action when this outbreak was first reported in late December in China.
In summary: inadequate social welfare and healthcare system paired with previous administrative mistakes, distrust of authority, a state led containment strategy and a head in the sand attitude by the current administration.
