I agree. He clearly is one of the most talented high school distance runners ever and I can't wait to see what he does this year.

That seems to fit right into Tinmans easy pace using Nico's 3 mile pr, if they're recovery days are slower then they would fit into Tinman's very easy pace. Jace might be running a bit too fast but he also seems to be more slow twitch so it probably works out.
if you recover in 2 days from quality work, it was not too hard.
if you don't progress within days, it was too hard.
you have to ask yourself and your coach should ask this question.
of course, coaches many, don't do this, and they should be shot.
Too much for early February -- what will he be doing in June? Is there any periodicity/peaking built into this training?
Nico is good, but he's not at LV or Ches level. One of the best things about LV was that we was nearly always under-trained for running in HS, so by the time the championship races came around, he was starting to peak.

In every video we see the race pace, gut buster workouts, but we never see much else. I wonder what the program is doing in terms of tempo's, easy days, long runs etc.. We also don't know how often they do these types of workouts. Would be interesting to see a complete view of the program before we judge.
I agree
If they’re only doing one hard workout/ race a week then imo there’s no burn out issues. However if they’re are already doing 2-3 of these workouts/races a week then yes burn out is an issue.
What happened to the last group who posted insane workouts? Are they still around? What happened to that group?
If I were the coach, I wouldn't have posted the video. What purpose does it serve except to raise expectations and increase pressure on Nico? Dumb.

No “kid” should be red lining this much. This kid is going to fry himself. Only benefit of NAU for this kid will be pure aerobic development. Would not be surprised if it took a couple years to see success in college. More volume may keep him from doing this level of intensity , so may see an initial drop in fitness. In time his endurance will start giving new development in fitness and add in his ability to red line
I disagree. I think redlining in highschool is fine for low-talent individuals (10:00 2 milers and the like) who may have no other chance for glory. If you aren't going to be running in college, or if you you won't be top level, why not chase the dream in high school where at least you can do some winning.
But for talented guys like Nico, and even sub 9:30 guys who might contribute in college, better to save the best for later.
Based on the workouts Nico has thrown down, he should be a 13:30 5ker, sub 3:40 1500m runner etc. He is exceptionally good for high school, but racing workouts is a recipe for disaster. Curious to see where his 3000m is at, keeping in mind college you need to be sub 8:00, or 8:34 3200m equivalent to even be thinking about DI indoor nationals. He obviously needs better mileage and more realistic workouts, like all the college and pro groups perform on the reg.
Nico please read Chris Lear's book on Alan Webb entitled "Sub 4:00."
7:51 to qualify last year.
Were these full miles?
Good point. Another thread debated the reference but here we see the best runner in the country and his coach, identifying a 1600 as a mile.

The coach didn’t post the video. It’s a series TempoSports is doing on the Newbury Park program that started in September. Remember we are just seeing the really hard days . There is a lot more to a team and program then one video. As you are calling them “Dumb” they are working hard and doing positive things. The irony is real ?
I have been coaching for 15 years in High School and enjoy these videos. I will never be judgmental to a program that’s super motivated and creating opportunities you could only dream of.

We talkin' bout practice? Not a race. Not a race, mind you. A workout.
These guys get it. Who gives a crap about one workout?
That is a moronic comment. There is always a high chance that a prodigious runner won’t live up to potential - and it won’t be because they had to run one-too-many 800s in their senior year.

Do you or the general public know all of his workouts or just the ones they film to put up online? Sincere question there because I definitely don’t know. Imagine someone wants to come film your team do a workout; are you going to do a 40 minute easy run at 6:30 pace followed by some strides? Or will you be amped up and try some hero workout? I think most coaches/teams get sucked into the latter more than the former.
As for the college groups, there is a wide variety of training styles out there. From my experience most of them train their distance/XC athletes all the same, whether they are a 1:48/2:04 guy/girl or a future marathoner.
That is not at all how it happens at P5 programs. They may have a specific 800 group with its own coach. They have sub groups of 1500-3k and 3k-10k. 800 runners never see the distance guys. The 1500 guys run XC but never run with the real distance guys again during the track season. Even within specific groups, the 28:30 10k guy does a different workout than the 30:30 10k guy.
I predict Nicos high school times and accompshments
This Track Season:
Mile: 4:01
3000: 7:53
3200: 8:32
5000: 13:36
CA 3200 State Champ, don't think he'll run at Brooks PR due to attempting a fast 5K after state
College Track PBs:
1500: 3:38
Mile: 3:57
3000: 7:40
5000: 13:06
Will be a NCAA champ in 5000 and XC
This dude is legit and one of the most talented American high schoolers ever. Coached by a guy that clearly knows what he's doing with his program knowing that he was a good college runner himself at a good program in Adams State and ran solid after college. I wouldn't doubt Nico and his ability going forward this season and into college.
I like to play these games. He is running very hard already so I don't see as much improvement as you.
This Track Season:
Mile: 4:01
3000: 7:59
3200: 8:36
5000: 13:45
College Track PBs:
1500: 3:41
Mile: 3:58
3000: 7:45
5000: 13:30
