I think more people fail at sub 3 than succeed mainly due to poor training. I went for sub 3 four times before I finally achieved it (have since ran 2'40)... My advice would be:
Train with other people - group mentality really pushes you on during your initial improvements.
Be consistent - keep your mileage as high as possible between now and when you do it, however, you're better off running 50 miles every week than doing an 80 followed by a few weeks at 30.
Race as much as you can - you need to teach your body to hurt.
Don't bother with EPO, that stuff is really not good for you, jeopardising your health for the sake of a bet would be a big mistake.
