A lot of the time, the "funny guy" is trying to use jokes to deflect because he doesn't know something or hasn't done something he was supposed to. This is when the routine annoys me.
For example, if I ask the intern when our deposit on a particular contract goes hard, a perfectly acceptable answer in my office would be "our deposit goes hard sooner than you, Tommy: December 6." Ok, so you made a joke, but you answered the question and the whole thing took three seconds. That's fine.
An annoying AF answer would be to say "our deposit goes hard sooner than you, Tommy" and then to just sit there looking at me and hoping I'll forget that I asked the question because you don't actually know the answer. Just say "I don't know" if you don't know, because at that point making a joke makes it look like you're deflecting.
