That is as much an outcome of having better marketing than everyone else as a reason for it.
You meant this as a rhetorical question, no?
Dunno, why is Apple so much better than every other company? Smart guys at the top.
i kind of like the new brooks running with the bulls ad.
Nike's Advertising agency, Weiden/Kennedy..or something like that ....has always been incredibly creative, innovative and edgy. As in any company, the decision makers have to approve ads so obviously there is a great chemistry between the company and the Ad group. Also, the fact that NIke has stayed with W/K over the years where others drop Ad agencies like old shoe models, has something to do with it.
Nike takes risk and rewards is people for being risky..When Tiger Woods was signed by Nike to a huge contract many people said it was way over the top..but Nike knew better..I think Phil Knight is gifted in that area
aside from having the biggest in-your-face celebrities as spokespeople, alot of their ads just feature normal athletes. my all time fave was that ad they had back in 2002--the one that lasted for like a minute, showing different normal athletes at play, with that piano music in the background.
remember that nike ad where it was continuous or whatever and they showed a guy swim out of water then switched to a runnner than a guy on a bike? that might be the ad the guy above me is talking about. 2002?
sweet one.

no that's not the one. this one had speed skaters, bb players, soccer players, runners...every athlete.
three words...MICHAEL JEFFREY JORDAN.
without him nike would have went down the tubes a long time ago...
It cant just be money, McDonalds has lots of money and everytime I hear one of their commercials I want to kill myself.

well that's the beauty of it. your act of suicicde would bring added, free PR to mcdonalds--and no PR is bad PR.
besides, mcdonalds marketing is targeted at kids. i dont see any kids kiling themselves over ronald mcdonald commercials.
Kids, and hungry fat people in Suburbans.
I really liked the commercial with Lance Armstrong at a press conference where he announced that he had cancer and intended to beat it. I found it to be pretty motivating.
you can find the lance commercial there

www.nikegridiron.comIt's simple....they know what they stand for and very, very, very rarely stray from that. The same cannot be said for the other major footwear companies.
Also, as someone mentioned earlier, the Weiden & Kennedy ad agency has been the creative engine behind NIKE's advertising and marketing strategies for many, many years. Other footwear companies have changed agencies like they change socks. It's virtually impossible to develop a consistent message to the consumer when you: 1. don't know what you stand for, and 2., make frequent changes to your creative team.
Third, NIKE knows how to hire and retain good people. Other companies can hire good people but most of them leave out of frustration.
Finally, the guy at the top of the company HATES to lose. He's a competitor and will stop at nothing to win. The same cannot be said for the heads of other companies.
