I love having a schedule, especially when it works. For me it's fast days on Wednesdays and Saturdays, long runs on Sunday, easy runs all the other days.
Following a schedule with built in hard days doesn't mean everything has to be set in stone. For example, I raced on Sunday and was still a bit sore today (Wednesday) but still did my workout today, but just a bit slower than usual. If I was feeling really beat up, I would have waited until tomorrow.
You should always be prepared to make adjustments to the weekly schedule. For example, if you know an ice storm is coming on a certain day, do the workout a day earlier or later. Not treating workouts like races makes it much easier to make adjustments like this too.
