It's truly tragic when something like this happens to someone who was a young talented athlete. She just graduated after 4 years of D2 college soccer. Thoughts and prayers to her family. Brings back memories of Ryan Shay.

You should not go over 300mg or you risk serious heart trouble. Much better to keep it well below 150mg and much better to get it through a couple of regular strength Gu packets spread over a race than to do coffee before the race or any concentrated pill form ever.
So I found your advice to be interesting and wondered what it meant in real life as I'd pound a double espresso before every race.
Double espresso: Roughly 150 milligrams of caffeine
1 12 oz coke: 34 mg
So 300 m g is a ton.
How would one take 300 mg in a marathon?
Update: Maybe the site I found was incorrect as I said the espresso had 80mg but the Starbucks site listed below shows 150mg so I changed it.

caffeine pills, rojo. one pill is typically 200mg. take one an hour before the start, and one during the race, and you are all set
ultramarathoners take a lot more than that of course, but over a much longer period of time, so supposedly it is still safe
a single shot of 5 hr energy Extra has 240mg

Not exactly. Well, 300mg is a ton but not at all unlikely for your average person in the U.S. Espresso has a relatively low caffeine content.
More likely: Starbucks large brewed coffee drinks have anywhere between 3-400mg of caffeine. Not unfathomable that one may hit the Starbucks on the way to the starting line and shoot for large considering it’s race day.

Which I take before every race, including my 4 marathons. I am not saying that it is a good idea, although caffeine is a proven performance enhancer. Just noting that I do it, and I suspect it is very common.
I agree, numerous cases are caffeine-related (though drugs affect people differently). Two main problems are that you’re already in the red zone in a race & you can crack (less a problem in ultras because of the slower pace), and you can climb the ladder, temperature-wise. As you overheat even more adrenaline can come into play & it’s a negative feedback loop. Running is natural, so it’s not always clear how close to the limit you are.
Caffeine won't do that.
Unless you take huge amounts.
Interesting article on caffeine toxicity
I'm thinking it was a undiagnosed cardiomyopathy.
There but for the grace of God, go I.
This could have happened to me if not only I hadn't started passing out during races which lead to a diagnosis of ARVC.
Really sad situation.
Yes. Most probably.

Yep, that verifies what I said.
I think they said 70 people in total needed medical attention that day.
Too much medical attention yields bad results.

Caffeine doesn't increase speed, endurance, nor stamina.
It's a stimulant, with many harmful and long lasting dangerous effects.
If you want to run faster, then just make the conscious choice to run faster
Don't take some totally unnecessary and dangerous drugs.

Not sure Smoove was advocating for it's use, but just making a factual statement. So NO coffee for race participants the morning of an event (or ever??)? Or is it the pill form that has you ruffled?
whats ARVC? I've passed out after races before ....not during
It had to be something that runs in her family. She was supposed to be very athletic. This happens from time to time and people freak out.

I agree, but whether we do or not, here's the report.
University Hospitals spokesman George Stamatis said Ceepo collapsed at the race and was brought in by emergency officials. Stamatis said Ceepo was dead on arrival to the hospital.
Thus, she did NOT die from collapsing at the marathon.
She died while being handled by the hospital emergency crew.
Had this poor woman just been left alone, she would probably still be alive, well and healthy.
I don't understand what you are saying whatsoever. They said she collapsed and people were doing chest compressions. So she would have been better off if people let her lay there? Are you on drugs or something?

It was a misleading statement though, not factual, which was why I responded.
Personally I never drank coffee. It's a terrible destructive habit and doesn't help anyone.
In near all of these cases the person who died was having some sort of Atrial Fib episode.
