The windy 200 doesn’t mean anything...but the 19.82 into a headwind does.
There is a long tradition of younger guys smoking an insane 200, sometimes a lifetime PB. I did a thread on it a few years ago.
So, while his 200 is a brilliant single result, I will hold off huge enthusiasm for his future 200m betterment. He looks a little choppy to me, which never seems to serve well in the 200, while it can strangely work better in the 400, for some—especially in that last 100.
Who knows. Will be great to see him up against some bigger talent, to see how he fares. Lyles is still clearly better than anyone else IMO, and 19.8x seems downright routine for Norman now.
The 200 at nats is going to be spectacular, especially if CC can deliver.
If you use Jonas Mureika's calculator to adjust for altitude (the track in Hobbs, New Mexico is at 3671 feet of elevation (1118.8 meters)), wind and lane (he was in lane 8 in the prelims and lane 5 in the final), the two 200 times are almost dead even to each other.
The 19.49 converts to 19.86 in still conditions at sea level.
The 19.82 converts to 19.87 in still conditions at sea level.
PS. I've found a video of the 19.49.
