Race fee isn't a factor? You're an idiot. If people are traveling to a marathon, it'll often be a major marathon or one where they foresee a chance at a PR, not an inordinately expensive non-major where there's no chance at a PR.
This sort of logic is like saying, "Well, they're already spending $5.00/gallon gas to go out to eat, so the $900 dinner is no big deal."
or
"They're already spending $40,000 on the wedding, so the $10,000 dress isn't a factor."
While the race fee may, on the margins, prove to be a lesser factor, it is still a factor.
