So basically this guy spends 8 hours a day "trotting" at almost walking pace?? What a fvcking waste of time.

I think what's he doing is pretty amazing. I don't understand the purpose or the story behind it (maybe he'll write a book or make a documentary some day), but for the time being, how about just some awe and support for what is remarkable. He's breaking new barriers in what we thought the human body is capable of. I really hope people in Madison are offering support, running with him, etc. If I still lived in Madison, I'd definitely want to pace him some miles. While I never could fathom even running half the distance he runs, putting aside societal norms and expectations for the conventional lives we are "supposed" to live, I am pretty inspired by his performance.

Sounds like someone you know personally or have a vested interest in. This may come a shock to you, but I don't have support someone just because they have an unusual hobby and/or way of spending their day. Not every unusual endeavor requires "support." Nor should he require it himself. If he has chosen an usual hobby, he should be content with doing it on his own.
looking at his strava, I am impressed.

Stupid. Death by running!
I am a runner through and through, but I struggle to wrap my head around this..
Dude needs to get laid
Agreed
How does he have the time and money to spend every day shuffling around for 8 hours?
He clearly is unemployed and relying on government and family/friend assistance. Not worthy of endorsement besides maybe some free products. The sad thing is that someone somewhere probably covers just a much distance for work or everyday life. There are jobs domestically and places in the far corners of the planet where people have to use walking as the only form of transportation. He just logs miles via gps and strava to build his ego and prove his self worth.
Nobody walks at 12 mph, more like 3-4 mph (with 4 being fairly quick). Once you hit around 5 mph, you're jogging, not walking. Get better data.
Yes I agree once sub 15min/mi it’s jogging. But that is not the point. He logs slow 1-3 miles run/jog/walks and counts that as mileage?!? Just because you don’t have a car and walk down the street for milk, that is now training or a run? Or you park in the back of the lot and walk to the store and now you training for the 400 meter? And what is the point of 20k miles in 2020, the numeric goal is arbitrary and kinda dumb. And living in the Midwest he will suffer or get hurt in the winter or summer. Not to mention to much of anything can literally kill you. The key to life is balance. Smart GPS device and the internet really distort overall truth and reality. What about the manual laborer that lifts 50-70lbs for 10-12 hours a day? It’s a ton of work and I am sure there is a way it could be quantified. Nor could your average person do it. Just because it’s not logged it doesn’t count or didn’t happen? If you don’t have a job or volunteer and just run, how is anyone better off? Are you contributing to society in any way or value? What is ones purpose? Ok I got deep. Ok I am off to set a new goal of how many steps I can walk up and down while whistling. I am aiming for 2.2 billion in. 2020 Ha!
I have stopped looking at blogs and comments and facebook and all that crap for the last five years. Now I look at this series of comments, and I completely remember why I have stopped looking at all that negativity. Some bummers believe they hold the whole truth of the universe, that they are the righteous man, and they dearly try to destroy everything that lays outside of their understanding. What is the need to inform the universe that you believe that this feat. or that event or that experience or this concept is bullshit or crap or useless? Is this to mitigate the bummer's own insecurity or lack of open-mindness? What is the reason for not just looking at new things we don't understand with simple honesty and claim: "I do not understand", rather than spit on the world with negativity?
I'm out for the next five years, I can't stand those trolls.

I have a friend who ran a 2:42 marathon, and was looking for praise from me because I was a good 10 minutes slower. He looked at me a bit perplexed when I told him his result was pathetic because anyone who can run 1:10 in the half, and 30:30 for 10k, should in my opinion be running well under 2:30. A 2:42 for him was just a fast training run. When I ran my PR in the marathon I couldn't walk 40 feet afterwards without having to stop.
You’ll run a lot faster faster if you lighten up a little.
Your friend is a pretty fast guy, but maybe the marathon isn’t his thing. Some people don’t really want to push their limits by running longer distances, they just want to go fast. Endurance isn’t their thing.
Obviously you enjoy endurance a little more than him even though you aren’t as fast.
It doesn’t make you less of a runner.
What nobility is there in running long, ultra-marathon-type distances on a regular basis, if at all? If anything, it sends the wrong message. There are cardiac risks associated with such behavior, and people might get the idea to emulate it.
Mike is currently logging "runs" at 16:30 per mile. He isn't running. He is seeking attention and likes on strava. He is a fraud.
How is that fraudulent behavior? Did someone lose something in the process of his data postings?
What happens on Instagram when someone likes something?

Since when is walking (15 min pace) considered running?
Idk as a lady w short legs I can testify that a 15 min mile (4mph) can either be a power walk or a light jog
just stumbled across this guy....just confused. why walk/jog 8 hrs a day....

Average person can walk fast at 12 mph. At 16 mph my pregnant 86 year old grandma could outpace him.
This guy deserves no ink.
Could your pregnant 86 year old grandma walk for 20 hours and 38 minutes?
https://calendar.ultrarunning.com/runner/show?first_name=Mike&last_name=ShattuckWow, what a bunch of ass-hats. Yeah, anyone could do this...hahahahahah. yeah right. Try walking 30-40 miles everyday for 2 weeks. Then report back. No days off, no breaks.
Now, understand this person has been doing this for 6 months and has a goal to set a world record.
Just because that world record and goal is not "running" in your mind or at some certain pace, you dismiss it.
hahahahaha, what a bunch of losers to use an anonymous board to cut a stranger down for literally moving more miles than anyone on strava for the last 6 months!
This is neat to see how much one can push your body and all but in no way healthy. No rest days, hardly enough time to eat/drink what your body needs, low amounts of sleep. The amount of stress on all body systems will be compounded over time. Not to mention you can’t really travel or go to a bday, wedding, funeral. Kinda selfish and very ego centric. If he is not crazy now he will be at the end if he can make it alive and non injured. Good luck!
