What’s up everyone. A bit of background info before I get started. Bare with me as it’s a long one.
30 year-old black male
Running for 16 years
PRs: 400 - 53.0 (relay split from HS)
800 1:58.1
1000 - 2:34.6
Mile - 4:19.2
3000 - 8:56
5000 - 15:38
5k - 15:09
10 Miler - 58:37
HM - 1:15:16
Didn’t take running very seriously (hardly ever warmed up) until my senior year of HS and even then I was barely running 15-20 mpw. Still managed PRs of 1:58.6/4:31/16:32. Never ran in college.
The next decade of running had been a bit of a rollercoaster, as I started working as a cook/chef and bounced around diferent training methods with wildly varying results. Waited too long to act on the fact that the service industry lifestyle wasn’t helpful with running (or much of anything else). The flashes of potential kept the dream alive, regardless of the level of delusion. It took until winter of 2017 to find a great job with a perfect schedule and clean up my act a bit.
As far as mileage, it’s ranged anywhere from 20-55 in the last decade plus. 3k and 5k PBs were from 3 years ago on 50mpw. The longer races were from 5 years ago or more on 18 mpw. The 800, K, mile, and 5000 were all from this indoor season on 38mpw, which ended up being my best string of races ever. 5 meets and 10 races over a 10 week span, with some doubles and a triple. All of them required traveling to The Armory and Staten Island from Pittsburgh by bus.
I’ve only suffered 2 major running injuries and have had some burnout episodes, but overall I’m not very injury prone and know when to back off. I plan on continuing the same training plan from the last year and will be aiming for an indoor race. Barring major sickness/injury, 4 years would be ideal for this goal.
Is this crazy? Yep. Am I? Yep. But I feel like I’m finally in a position to fully commit to running, as I have no kids, no smoking hot wife, no house, no car, and I damn sure don’t make 150k+ a year. I got nothing to lose, so why not suffer a bunch to suffer for an extra 3:5x?
I’ll be posting my thing here weekly, so Let’s Run, you do yours as well. Wish me luck. Cheers y’all :-)
P.S. There will be no pics of my actual “thing”. Sorry fellas ;-)
