Figure I can use this as motivation on race-day if everyone thinks I can't.
Background: Ran a negative-split 1:24 half on a fast course with pretty limited training (~3 runs per week, no workouts ~ just steady running, biggest long run was 8.5 miles). Thought a 1:35 would be a good showing, so was quite surprised when I was running 6:20s mid-way. I completely run by feel, so it was a cold day and I warmed up and just started passing people. Was a miler and 800 guy when I was younger.
Compared to that, I've done a lot more in the marathon buildup after reading the boards on this topic as I'm now at 5-6 runs per week (averaging 6.5+ miles on non-long runs) and have hit a few long runs of over 14 miles (run at pace of 6:55-7:10 in Central Park Bridle + 6 miles loop). When I don't run, I either do a pretty intense cycling workout, basketball or lift. I'm 6 weeks out so I might toss in a 16-17 miler the next couple ones before scaling back. Have done a few workouts but nothing too intense ~ typically 3-5 repeat 1000s with 2 min jog rest. Has been a very healthy buildup only interrupted by a pre-planned ski trip last week (got some running in but it was lower than most weeks).
Do I have a shot or will I hit a wall in the second half due to not being up more in the 60-80 mpw range with more tempos, intervals and longer runs?
