To add a running element: In the winter I run much more often on busier roads (because of the near-impossible footing on side roads). Part of the shoulders are taken away by snow, so I'm closer to cars than I'd like. I've gotten in the habit of looking at every driver coming toward me, to gauge whether they're paying attention. Every winter the percentage of drivers who are fumbling with their phones increases.
At some point, it will be safer to run on the ice-covered side roads.
And no, I shouldn't have to run on a treadmill four months of the year just so people can text while driving.
