Many of the training shoes have dramatically reduced in quality and functionality - the NIMBUS is a prime example. I think that it peaked at the 15 or 16 and has been slipping aversive...bulkier, less responsive, and poorer fit.

Most of the people you know in Australia that are running in ASICS aren't likely running in Tartheredge/Dynaflyte/DS Trainer, they're running in the high-end plodders with visible GEL, which they're getting from places like RebelSport, Sportsco and the US stores like Athletes' Foot & Footlocker, or the tiny sports section of Myer/David Jones. The Japanese are pretty parochial, have a huge running culture and the product made for the home market is stuff many runners outside of Japan would likely wish was more widely available. There's way more choice for high-end plodders in the US than in Australia and your typical Aussie consumer is lazy ("she'll be right, mate" lazy, not just fatso/unfit lazy), conservative and uninformed; it's far easier to buy what fellow uninformed friends recommend than do your research and this -
"Some people here wouldn’t have even heard of brooks, or ever thought of running in Nike."
is proof.
Brooks seems to be having problems of their own and sales will surely be down this year (Maybe not $180 million).
Important shipping note:
Brooks is moving to a new-and-improved shipping center and a big move like this comes with some growing pains. Please bear with us — some orders are taking 10-14 business days to arrive. We’re working as hard as we can to get everyone’s order out in a timely manner.
Don’t mind the wait? You can still order online! Want it now? Look for your gear in a nearby store.
Yes, lifestyle shoes are a much bigger market, but that's never been Asics' market, and it's not necessary either. Brooks has been very successful over the last 20 years by focusing on running specialty. Nobody lines up for the next Brooks "drop." There's no reason that Asics shouldn't be competitive with Brooks among the hobby-jogger crowd.
