I'd guess that 90% couldn't run 100 meters nonstop.

FTFY:
Remember the OP is asking what percentage 50 yr olds can run "5 miles under 50 minutes" not under 60 minutes. Your statistics would be more representative of using the one hour mark.

A more realistic question would be what percentage of 50-year-olds can even run at all.
...Or want to run. Many 50+ year olds aren't into a high-impact sport like running. I encounter a lot of 50+ years old at the gym including myself (I'm 58) who do non-weight bearing cardio (e.g, spin bike, eliptical, etc.), yoga classes, strength training ...stuff like that. With my advancing osteoarthritis I find myself jogging far less these days than ever before (12 mpw). I doubt I could run 5 miles under 50 minutes, even with the wind at my back and going downhill. ?
I think a better way of asking this question would be that out of all the 50 yr olds that do run...how many can run sub-50 for 5 miles. ?

Woot. I'm in the top 1/100 of 1 percent.
I ran a 10 miler at 8 pace and didn't think it was anything special.
Age group hardware has been getting easier to collect.
It's pathetic that my pathetic efforts are at the top percentiles of the population.
