How about some thoughts on Brad Hauser's half-marathon debut -- 1:03:40. Pretty good for what he called a training run.

nothing special. About what I'd expect relative to how he's been racing. If he was about 90 seconds faster I'd say it was a good race for him. It sounds like he wasn't intending to be overly competitive if what you say is right so if that wasn't an all-aout effort then that would be a little more impressive.
Coming from his background an relating to his track pr.s I would think he would be aiming for at least 1:02:00 for a half-marathon, along the lines of what Todd Williams ran in his debut whan his 10k pr was only 28:16.
If I am not mistaken, that would put him near the top of our current half runners (KK excepted of course). I think it was a fantastic effort for Brad. Probably one of the better races in his post-collegiate career.
I wouldn't use our list of current half-marathoners as a measuring stick for someone as good as he is. Especially when 1:06 made a World half-marathon championship team recently. Hauser's a guy who should run 1:03 as a decent effort, kind of like a 3:33 1500 runner who runs a 3:37. A nice job but nothing to go crazy over.
He ran 4:51 pace. I bet he's done that numerous times alone on 10 mile tempo runs. On a regular basis.
Our 10k guys are looking really good right now. Sad to say but our half-marathon and marathoners suck. And they themselves would admit their not getting the job done.
Again, a nice rice but nothing that would cause me to do a double-take when looking at the results. But I'll admit I know nothing about the course or conditions.
Look at the all time half-marathon list, find where 1:03:40 falls, annd count the number of guys who never came within 30 seconds of Hauser's 10k pr.s If Ed Eyestone, Salazar, Williams, Porter, or Fox ran that time at his age you wouldn't say it was anything special. And Hauser should be shooting for that level. And I'm glad he's finishing races again because he's a big talent and its good to see him back on track.
It looks like Githuka has the course record in 1:02:40 so the course isn't super fast, and Hauser was only 40 seconds back so he gets more credit then I initially gave him. Yes, one of the better races for him these last 2 years. But based on what he's done in the past I still contend that 1)I'm not surprised, and 2) for him I wouldn't call it "fantastic". I would say a solid race that he should feel pretty good about but just a stepping stone to competing for the win in a race like that instead of 4th.
He should gain some confidence that he's back in the right direction and ready for a good marathon debut. 2:14 at worst for his first time out if he runs smart.
Where did he run his 1;03;40? Jason

San Diego, check out the link on the front page.
I thought Hauser's debut was successful, but I am a critic of him moving up in distance for 1 reason:
He has dropped out of a fair amount of 'shorter' track races. Therefore, how is he going to have consistent 'staying-power' to complete some top marathons, when dropping out is obviously an option with him?
1) 1:03:40 is a training run.
2) San Diego is downhill.
The AFC half.
The first mile is sort of rolling slightly downhill.
The second mile is rolling.
Mile 2 to 4 are major downhill.
4 to 6 are very slightly downhill.
The leaders went out at 28:51 for the first 10K.
Mile 6-10 are dead flat but there was a little bit of a wind.
The first 10 miles are blazing fast then you make a turn and climb. It is a pretty good size hill you go up from 10 to just past 12.
If you know the course, it can be fast. If you don't run it right, you crash and burn in a major way.
They post the 10K splits and finish times. You can see for yourself that many people die if you look at the results.
Hauser has to be pleased with this effort. Sub 2:14 sounds reasonable for a marathon debut.
The inside scoop is Hauser and others from the Farm Team have been up at Mamouth doing 140 miles a week. The came back to sea level to race and are heading back up soon, if they aren't already there. The FT crew ("Nike" contracters included, also Pete Julian who train out there in the family) will have quite a good number doing the marathon this year, watch for Chicago and Twin Cities.
I think Hauser deserves credit for this effort. It seems like many are giving him a hard time but he should be pleased with this race. As a side note, can anyone tell me who Peter Julian is? Who he runs for? His PRs? Where he's from? etc. Also, who is this 19 yr old, Bouchard I think his name is? Does anyone know who he runs for or where he's from? I was surprised to see a teenager in the top 25. Thanks for the info.
1;03;40 is definitely not a training run.
Good for Mr. Hauser...
Drew Bouchard is a local San Diego guy who goes to Boston College now. He ran at St. Augustine HS in SD was about a 9:50 2 miler. He had a nice run at AFC, and looks to be pretty stong heading into the XC season.
Julian is has been one of the top Americans at 10K for the past 5 or 6 years now (PR of 28:05 from 1999 - I believe). He is originally from Oregon (U of Portland) and started to work under Vin Lananna about a year ago when he began to get serious about the marathon. I seem to remember him also having a pretty serious case of Stomach Cancer a couple years ago. Had a miraculous recovery before He debuted last year with a 2:16-17 at Chicago, I believe. I think the results listed him at being 24 yrs old, but in reality I think he is about 30.
That's what I know.
This halfmarathon is not easy. The first 10km is fast because it includes one 500ft drop. The course is hard. 63min is translates in 61 or better...
No kidding
booooowllshiiiit. There is 500 foot drop the first 10K
The race starts at about little over 300 feet above sea level. It goes to sea level and then finishes at about 200 feet above sea level. The net drop in the race is something like 100 feet.
