Speaking from experience, someday you will realize how meaningless it all is.
You’ll realize you spent all that time and energy for some fleeting moments of perceived glory being “competitive” in hobby jogger races.
Run enough to stay healthy and compete to a certain extent. But when it’s all said and done, it’s pretty much a meaningless pursuit.
The thrill of winning a race, the satisfaction of pushing your body to its limits, and the joy and excitement of setting a PR isn't meaningless. It's priceless.
But suppose running were meaningless, suppose I couldn't PR anymore, and suppose that I could never win or even race again. Would I still run? Hell yeah, because it keeps me healthy, because it's a stress reliever, because it's nice to discover new trails, and because the whole thing is fun.
There is no good in giving all of that up in order to do something boring with your wife that you wouldn't have done by yourself in the first place even if you had all of the time in the world. Life is short enough as it is.
