yup I think so. People used to train dumb af. We have studied both energy systems and biomechanics a lot over the past 40-50 years. We have a through understanding of it now. I do not think there are any more breakthroughs to be had, short of finding new ways to dope. Everything else is going to be small discoveries, marginal gains.

Many improvements in world records are due to a larger pool of athletes. Kenyans, have been racing under their own flag only since early 1960's. Faster shoes and faster tracks may help improve 800m performances. The greatest possibility for improved performances, 800m will require a larger pool of sub-45 400m men athletes and a larger pool of sub-50 women 400m athletes training and racing 800m. The 47.xx(+) men 400m athletes and 52.xx(+) women 400m athletes have maxed out their potential in 800m.
I think we largely had distance running figured out 30 or 40 years ago. I suspect that most of the gains we have seen since then have been due to larger financial incentives and resulting influx of talent, doping/PEDs, a greater number of paid pacesetters and marginal improvements in shoes, track surfaces and a preference toward faster marathon courses.

Except for Rupp, US men race Marathon about as fast as US men raced Marathon fifty years ago. 2:12+ Marathon.
How much is there really to know? It's seems like a very simple sport.

If I were a young buck wanting to move up in this mundane world of exfizz I would collect spit from as many runners including the top dogs as I could then sequence their DNA as a starting point.
