Should you run while on a skiing vacation?

Only neurotic runners lacking confidence would opt to run during a skiing vacation.

Literally reminds me of Frank Shorter autobiography. There is a part of it where he and Prefontaine go to a ski resort for a month and they literally run twice a day and ski in the middle of their two runs.

My approach is usually to do a hard workout or race just before I leave to go skiing. Then I grab a few miles here and there as I feel like it. Usually I run every other day, about 4-8 miles. Some days I do it before the lifts open; some days I do it after I'm done. Depends on the season and the weather. Lots of times when I'm spring skiing I prefer to do my running in the afternoon because the snow can get a little wet by then anyway. This time of year I'd grab a few treadmill miles when it's still dark so you can just enjoy the rest of the day. Don't worry about how much or how hard you run, but getting a few miles in goes a surprisingly long way towards avoiding loss of fitness. Also, remember that if you ski hard, you're at least getting a really good strength workout.

I personally don't worry about working out but I do usually go for 5 mile runs in the morning because Im too tired in the evening. A light swim in the evening would probably help the muscles if you can be bothered and have the facilities.

Enjoy your downhill skiing. Mix in some cross country skiing. Running can wait.

If you're doing it right, skiing can be cross-training. Lots of turns, lots of steeps, lots of bumps. Limited resting. Just don't hurt yourself.

If you're doing cruisers all day and drinking 2 beers with lunch, you probably ought to mix in some running.

If you don't run for 6 days, you will lose 6 days of fitness. So it will take another 6 days to get back to previous fitness level. So in total you will lose 12 days.

I have a few weeks Montana around Christmas and plan to mix running in with Nordic to keep the volume up. I’ll be doing some resort skiing and touring as well but with a race looming end of January I can’t neglect the running. Figure I’ll hit the key workouts with run/Nordic and then the easy days will be spent either on the slopes or on the back country.

I used to run after skiing all the time. I never gave it much thought as to whether it was going to wear me out. It did not. You'll be fine. Don't overthink it.

Depends. If you're just cruising the slopes that's one thing, but if you are beating the crap out of yourself by shredding the bumps aggressively like a big black dog then don't do it because you're already using muscles you aren't used to.

Stick to XC skiing. You'll get in a good, low stress workout, and will save $$$.

If you are any kind of runner at all (like those tough mountain runners) you would run UP the hill and ski down it.

I usually ski til 2pm, take a nap, and half the time when I wake up I'll feel like running and half the time I won't.

Ends up being a bit of a down week, but that's not always bad.

If you are skiing out west, hell no. Ski hard and have fun. It is a privilege to be out there, save all your energy for it. The altitude and the long difficult runs will keep you plenty fit.

If you are in the east, then yes put in a few miles before you ski.

literally? Like did they really, like literally run 2x a day....literally

1. vacations are for fun. running isn't fun. don't run.

2. who cares about indoor track? waste of time as a distance runner to concern yourself with that.
