i thought they were just for track and XC racing.

no, they're designed for shorter distance road races (a half marathon for very efficient runners is the suggested limit). Assuming your biomechanics aren't too bad, you should be able to run a 5k without too much trouble in them.
they are fine for the roads. the longest race ive tried them out in is a 10k but ive done a 14 mile workout in them without any trouble.
actually, i think they were designed for a marathon. the idea was to make a shoe that was all about being lightweight without worrying about being durable. the perfect marathon shoe would last 26.2 miles and then fall apart if you tried to run any farther than that. that's the concept behind the mayfly.
I've seen Eric Clifton running 50 mile trail races in them, he might also be wearing them in the Running On the Sun video.
