Um, 6 games back now.

Go cards.
Last but not least 1908.
Cardinal fans can believe all they want about the division being over, but they still need to be nervous that the Cubs are only 6 games back with 14 games to play against the central division rivals. As Peter Gammons said, "They are letting a dangerous team stay close." August and September will sure be fun!
C'mon guys, don't bash the lovable loser cubs. I mean, any team could have a bad century, right?
Well said. I would love for the race to be close as long as it is the result of both teams playing great baseball. Still, I expect that we'll have another division crown when all is said and done; we really just have no major weaknesses this year. An ideal scenario (from my biased perspective of course) would be for us to break your hearts once again in a 7-game NLCS that's loaded with drama, clutch play, and fireworks between players and managers alike (LaRussa and Baker LOVE to mix it up baby!) THAT would make my decade...as long as we don't go on to get overmatched in the world series again, that is.

The unfortunate thing for St Louis fans is that when the season ends......you still live in St Louis.
Enjoy the mosquitos goober.

And behind the yankees, they have the most storied franchise, period. And the most World Series rings. Period again. GO CARDS!
Actually, they're in third place, with 8 World Series championships, to the Athletics' 9 and the Yankees' 26.

Sorry, it looks like I miscounted. The A's and Cardinals are tied with 9 each.
Unlike the Cards and Yankees, the A's won half of their titles in another city (located in 3 cities total). But I guess it still counts, technically, but Oakland can't claim those in my mind. Still, where are the Cubs?
There is definitely a Cubs bias in the media, at least lately. We all know that the Yankees and Red Sox have an obvious bias over everyone else. But the Cubs aren't far behind.
What other crappy team gets so much exposure?
And in crappy I mean:
Only 6 winning seasons since 1990 (Cards have 10).
Only 6 winning seasons in the 1970's & 1980's COMBINED (Cards have 12).
Only 4 winning seasons in the 1960's (Cards have 9 and one win away from a perfect 10).
Only 1 winning season in the 1950's which was exactly .500 (Cards have 5).
Only 2 in the 1940's (Cards had all 10 winning seasons including seven with 95+ wins).
etc etc etc... I mean the Cubs are a team with an obvious losing history and the media hypes them up as much as anyone year after year, especially lately. It's gross.
GMS BEHIND THE CARDINALS YEAR BY YEAR:
2005: 6.5 at the moment
2004: 16
2003: (cards 3 back)
2002: 30
2001: 5
2000: 30
1999: 8.5
1998: (cards 6.5 back)
1997: 5
1996: 12
etc etc etc...
btw, if you average those gms back it comes out to almost 10.5 gms back per year. Close enough to 15...
and if you take it back a few decades it surpasses 15 games behind the Cards (on average) by quite a bit..
You seem to have a lot of time on your hands to research this stuff. I guess this guy has a point.

Well this is the year 2005, and with a thing called the internet it takes about 30 seconds to pull that stuff up, and about 5 minutes to count & write (which i learned in pre-school).
I mean I could just ignore those facts but then I'd be like a Cubs fan.
Only 2 teams have 40 wins right now.. the White Sox & the Cardinals. How ironic.
GO BALTIMORE!
cards rule! 1 hitter.
remember how good the cards were last year during the regular season...but tell me how they faired when they matched up to my boys in beantown? so you can get all excited about the cards...but they still suck and i am sorry to those cubs out there because there doesn't seem to be an end in sight.
shame you guys didn't get to face our ace in the WS last yr.
WIll the Red Sox even make the playoffs this year?
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
