I would learn to train by heart rate. There’s really no conditions that are too bad to run, it’s just a matter of learning the pacing and managing your fluids.
Heart rate is not the problem in heat son..
Actually this is one of the issues I am concerned about. I've tried many of the above suggestions, #1 being "slow down" and yet I still find my bpms getting up into the upper 150's-165 after just a mile or two. And if my pace slows down any more I'd be walking. (if my best trained half marathon pace is about 9:35, I am running closer to like 11:35....and adding in some "water station walk breaks" (a la Hal Higdon), whereas my ideal cardio zone is 130's bpm. (I have read the science of why: body pumps harder to get blood to skin to cool, but humidity makes it harder to cool through sweat so heart pumps blood faster.)
But I guess as a follow up to all, is there any benefit to say "walking" the Long Run miles even if planning to run the long miles when the actual Fall Marathon comes along? or is it just minimal..... (and aside from taking an extraordinary amount of time to train)
And thanks everyone for all the great responses.
