The DOC
Peter Snell, no wait....Alan Webb....no definatly Peter Snell.
Mr. Ovett, I'd have to say. Helluva runner and entertaining aswell...
Gerry Lindgren, Ron Hill and Ron Clarke.
Steve lives in Colorado Springs and is a great guy. His story needs to be told. He was coaching a HS team that catered to juvenial crimminal types. He actually has placed some of his runners into mainstream colleges. He would pay out of his pocket for them to races at local meets. He is the classic who knows what would've happened stories. Ask him about never being able to run again!
The Chairman of the Boards - Eammon Coughlan
Me!
So many!!! Coghlan is definitley one of my favourites - always excting to watch. But a bit like my favourite song it changes from time to time. At the moment I have been 'rediscovering' Peter Elliott. What a great runner he was, so gutsy and under-estimated during his peak. Wish there were more around like him now.
Seb Coe, hands down.
DJL
Haile Gebrselassie. That guy is my hero.
In second place I would put Zatopek
Alison Roe, John Walker, Gabe Jennings (but not while he's riding a bike to Brazil)
While Fred Rogers is my hero, I'll put Geb at the top of my favorite runner list.
Bill Rodgers. He, decided to start running 20 miles a day while working as a janitor and smoking half-a-pack of cigs a day. Won Boston while wearing a T-shirt with Greater Boston TC in crooked magic marker lettering. The antithesis of the modern show-pony "oh, I need a sponsor" mentality.
Honorable mention: Nenow, Greg Meyer, Mark Curp.
Jim Ryun the King / Currently, Bucher-Sui runs the 800m like I wish I could, out in sub 50, never lets up, drives the bus, "NO Prisoners" style
I could mention some idols of my youth, but in terms of being a really fine articulate generous person who also runs boldly and brilliantly, they don't come much better than Bernard Lagat.
Bernard Lagat 100% for men, shoot he set up a program to help kenyan kids go to school so he is a nice guy too. Also Joan Beniot for women, come on have a baby win the Olympics all in about 8-9 months thats amazing!
Pat Porter.
Pat Porter.
My aunt. Without her I never would have tried running at all or gotten as far as I have now. I think she was All American a few times in the late 90s. She holds all the distance records at the high school and college she attended and now shes a pro triathlete. She finished third or four in the female division in Lake Placid last year.
