Galen had many bites at the apple and he broke 13 once. Galen was not a 12:50 guy. Facts are stubborn.
Huh. Thats funny. It looks like Chelimo has had the same amount of "bites" at the apple and never broken 13. His PR is only 13:03.
Facts are even more stubborn for Rupp haters.
Damn....there are some dumb a** posters on this site. "Only 13:03". How fast have you run the distance? He just ran 12:57 by the way...

Paul Chelimo is clearly a better track runner than Galen Rupp and could likely break any US records that Galen has, including Galen’s 26:44. Paul Chelimo will also likely run a faster marathon than Galen if he eventually moves up. While some may argue the point, it seems obvious that Paul Chelimo will go down in history as a better runner than Galen Rupp. Galen. Galen never came close to winning a Diamond League event and Paul has already done so.
Of course!

Fair enough. I stand corrected. I saw the results from the brussles 5k and it looks like Paul Chelimo is better than Galen Rupp by 1 second at the 5k.
Bad Wiggins is right that Rupp's 10k AR was a time trial set up for him, but I argue that Paul Tanui tried his best to win the race... anyway, and Rupp beat him, which he didn't in the WCs '13, '15 and the Olympics '16.
So, and AR and a victory over the superb Tanui.

Galen Rupp is the man
Chelimo is better than Rupp at 5k.
Don't know why he never ran stronger there with 3:50 speed and 26:44 endurance. I don't think Chelimo will touch those times but agree that 3k/2 mile is a good place to try. I just don't see Chelimo being any more competitive than Rupp was at 10k globally.

1/10
Chelimo did get faster though, once he got on the sauce (knowing that his "people" are allowed to cheat for political reasons). He sure stagnated for a while, didn't he?
once you break a barrier the time really doesn't matter until its a WR. Anything sub 13 is meaningless until its a WR. Anything sub 4 is meaningless until a WR. Even in running circles this is true. You say you are sub 4 miler or sub 13 5k runner you will get the same respect across the board. Someone says they are 1258 or 1255 no one cares. Even this race where this kid runs 1243. Who cares? Aint a WR, might as well just saved himself for a WR attempt.
Then it’s safe to say that Paul Chelimo is better than Ryan Hill as we’ve seen at USA indoor and outdoor championships the last two years.

People know I give Galen a lot of crap, but unfortunately he ran during the era of Mo, and picked up some of his habits. So he never really pushed it. Same thing would happen to Chelimo if he came up during the Mo era.
I don't think Chelimo is as composed as Galen. He does a lot of stupid things during races. He might be more naturally talent than Galen, but Galen is/was the smarter runner.
I just can't trust Chelimo's mental foundation.
Now, if he matures, and is able to really focus, then he could possible do some serious damage as as distance runner.
This. Didn't Chelimo lose a race because he looked back like two dozen times in the last 200 or something stupid? Chelimo is good, but he definitely needs to learn to focus and stop looking around so much. Be aware, but checking your shoulder as often as he does indicates fear

Several really stupid posters in this thread, but you are vying valiantly for the dunce cap me boy. According to you, Noah Ngeny’s 3:43.30 mile is meaningless and about as worthy of respect as a 3:59.99 mile. You must really have struggled in school little boy.

Putting people in quotation marks really ties it together nicely.

How many sub 13:10 clockings does chelimo have?
The 13:04.11 for @bentrue was not just his 2nd best ever, it marked the 4th year in his career with a sub-13:10.
Americans:
10-Lagat
6-Kennedy, Rupp
4-True
3-Teg, Chelimo
2-@djritzenhein, Jager, Mead, Hill, Jenkins, Lomong, @CDerrickRun
1-Solinsky, Maree
According to the Men's 5000m all time list, Rupp has 12 sub 13:10 clockings, as well as a 13:10.05.
http://www.alltime-athletics.com/m_5000ok.htmI'm not sure where you're getting your numbers from, but I can think of 4 times Solinsky ran under 13:10 in 2010 (12:55, 12:56, 12:56, and 13:08).
His 26:48 was with the big Dogs in Brussels.
His 26:44 had luxurious pacing in 2014.
In my opinion they have pretty much the same ability from 1500m-5000m. For 10km and up, so far Rupp has been superior.
By logic, if someone is slightly weaker at 10km but equal at 5km then he will likely have the same mile ability.
Unless... Rupp was actually capable of 12:50 or thereabouts.
Fellow Americans, give credit to both of them as they are both hardworking talented guys who proudly represent your country.
Most countries can only dream of such talent.

I apologize - You were stating number of years with a sub 13:10, not the number of sub 13:10 clockings.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
