Back in college, I made a friend with a Russian girl. I wasn't hot back then, but I was super cringey. Anyways I told her that I was gonna be "infamous" throughout this whole university area.
In my cringey brain, I wanted to be a fvck boy. It was the time when Tinder was fresh. I used to be old fashioned. I've come to realize that I put people on pedestals too. It was a gross time.
Anyways I did achieve becoming "infamous." But it wasn't for that.
I ran so much around the whole university area and surrounding universities, that I became known as "that runner." Some people would approach me and say: "Are you that runner? I saw you running on that highway... that's crazy!" I would feel especially flattered when chicks would say they saw me run.
I used to run shirtless when it was below freezing. And then sometimes when it was snowing or there was heavy rain. Those exploits added to my status of being a runner. Sometimes, I'd run at night around 11 or midnight, and I'd get high fives.
I wasn't on the D1 team. But on one chance I was running, the head coach of TF & XC approached me. I am certain other members of the D1 team talked about me. However, at that time I was a senior and soon to graduate.
Anyways, in my case: You know you've made it if you stick to the promises and goals you've had years ago.
It might not be related to financial success or relationships, but if you follow through with the goals or dreams you had months or years ago, then you're sticking true to your core.
I really didn't want to be known as a fvck boy throughout my university area. I just wanted to be popular enough for people to talk about me and it happened. And I did it through running and running at crazy/irrational times of the day.
When that Russian chick saw me, her eyes widened. I made a promise to her that I would be infamous throughout university, and two years later, I became that.
It will take some time to "make it" in the real world though.

When theJeff starts a thread about you ?
When you've moved to a cabin in the woods, need very little money, and never have to deal with public interaction.

Agreed, Ted Kaczynski is the pinnacle of success.

I think Dick Proenneke should be more the goal.

Come back after you read his manifesto.

I have. He's on the right track with some of the stuff about technology's effect on society, but Uncle Ted is clearly a sociopath, and I don't put much stake in the opinions of sociopaths.
I haven't read his manifesto but I agree with the premise.
You wake up
When your second album is both a critical AND commercial success.
You are experiencing delusions of grandeur.
You have testes and no uterus, You marry a woman, socialize as a man, but still get to take home the checks for winning the women's 800m (all while still being seen as a victim of 'oppression').

And you do it all running typical women's times, but everyone else in the race is scared of you, including those who should really move up to the 1500 cuz they don't have the basic speed to run a fast 800 but won't admit it.
When Eastern European super models agree to marry you even though you are an unattractive blow hard with a toupee. It also helps if you are in charge of a major country.

This and more precisely one must have a "Letsrun MF" thread and also a "hate/troll" thread. Then they have made it. For HS runners I used to believe the zenith was being interviewed by DougfromDyestat but that day has past...
Life offers so many great moments that can pass us by too quickly if we do not pause and take them in. Life also gets more difficult, changes our perspectives and causes us to reevaluate goals and values. With that in mind the "made it" moments have happened for me several times, not like an elusive mirage in the distance that never satisfies, but like milestones that I look back on and am thankful for:
I bought my first car.
Got my first job with insurance.
Took my first paid work trip.
First flight on a private jet.
Kevin Durant noted one of his "made it" moments in his MVP acceptance speech:
"And last, my mom. I don’t think you know what you did. You had my brother when you were 18 years old. Three years later, I came out. The odds were stacked against us. Single parent with two boys by the time you were 21 years old. Everybody told us we weren’t supposed to be here. We went from apartment to apartment by ourselves. One of the best memories I had was when we moved into our first apartment, no bed, no furniture and we just sat in the living room and just hugged each other. We thought we made it."
