What's that supposed to mean? My whole point is the WCBS FM radio I have been familiar with had these wonderful DJ's. Okay, fine...I understand what you mean by the advertisers comments. But why should I be forced to listen to internet radio or satellite radio to hear these or other radio personalities? Again, the FM band caters to a variety of tastes, and it should continue to offer oldies to those who enjoy them. Just like rock is on several stations, just like classical, just like jazz, just like spanish, just like soul. Why should one type of musical taste be eliminated (from FM)?
I can only hope a new FM oldies station will be created and brings back the WCBS radio personalities that we abruptly fired last week.
I'm 27, old by board standards but young by social standards. Some of you kids should go listen to some early Ray Charles, some early R&B or some old old jazz. All the pieces of today's crap and yesterday's good rock are there. If you can't appreciate the genius of Ray Charles then you have no business forming an opinion about music.
Geezer: radio personalities are WAAAYYYY overrated, they are banal and just like to hear the sound of their own voices with all that babble. Don't tell me you watch Katie Couric for anything other than her looks. You aren't forced to listen to anything, but it's time you learned that Infinity (or ClearChannel) is ALL about making money and wouldn't cancel anything that was continuing to draw decent numbers. Oldies is a dying format and is starting to blend with the classic rock format, the oldies station in my local market plays 60s and 70s only, no 50s or earlier. The falloff in marketshare probably has something to do with boomers and older investing in satellite radio.
To the other guy: Ray Charles was good, but there's no need to deify him. Howlin' Wolf, Paul Robeson, Nat Cole, and Louis Armstrong were GREATS.

WCBS-FM went "Jack" tonight, giving up playing oldies after 33 years. They've been sneaking in more & more newer songs over the last three years--phasing out 50's and early 60's/pre-Beatles--but tonight, at 5:00 pm, they switched completely. All the on-air staff, including the great Harry Harrison, are gone. No more Beach Boys. No more Four Tops. No more Carpenters, or Harry Chapin, or Shirelles, or Turtles. No early Stones, no Simon & Garfunkel. It's all over.
The greatest station since WABC is gone. And it sucks.
Not running related, but had to vent.
You are so right..Jack Radio has turned me right off. I couldn't believe it when I thought I was listening to my favorite station. All that screaming and the songs. Well I tried, I listen and turned it off about 5 minutes into it, and tried to go back a few times since. I can't and won't any more. So many memories left when Harry left and now that he was back, even for one day a week..well...No more 101.1 for me.
Oh I like that idea of boycotting JACK's advertisers... I like that a lot...and let them know why your not purchasing their products
First of all, I am not a geezer...I am a woman (and not an old woman either). Tom Selleck is more my speed than Katie Couric! Ha, ha.
Yes, it IS about making money AND serving the younger generation, along with disregard for our generation, the listeners of this particular oldies station. And I bet you anything, Infinity Broadcasting/WCBS FM did not care whether the oldies station was making money or not, and making decent numbers. They didn't even have to decency to give the station, its' staff and the loyal listeners any kind of forewarning. They just coldly and abruptly ended it, and fired everyone. After 33 years. Nothing. Zip. That bothers me more than trying to find another station to hear the music.

Uh, what makes you say that?
The Baby Boomers can\'t figure out how to work a modern day stereo system...I believe that this is the reason JACK is in...I love it, but my Mom is sad...Oh well, I guess we will rule the world soon!!!
They put Jack on the LA market recently as well. It's horribly lame. They've basically taken several genres, then mix together the top 500 songs of those genres. Lame, lame, lame.
The big problem with radio right now is that they don't play sets of music that make sense together. They just play what they think we want to hear. It could all be good music, but if it doesn't mesh together then it is pure crap. For instance, you could take the best of Mozart's horn concertos, but if you played different movements of different concertos one after another it'd be completely stupid.
The only good radio program I know of right now is Jim Ladd's, aired on 95.5 KLOS out here in LA. He's been in the biz for a long time and has a huge variety of music that he plays. There are lots of songs I've never heard, and the best part is that the songs fit together, they aren't just a random collage of once-popular music.
Lord have mercy.

It's not just about the music!!!!! Many of them are like old friends.
LOOKS LIKE IT'S TIME FOR SOME NEW FRIENDS. EITHER THAT OR GET A LIFE.
It was our generation that gave everyone greats like Elvis, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, etc., etc.
IT WAS ALSO YOUR GENERATION THAT WAS GOING TO CHANGE THE WORLD BUT HAS SPENT THE LAST THIRTY YEARS JUST LOOKING FOR YOUR CAR KEYS.
What a loss, I say.
GET A LIFE I SAY.

Paul Przysatawski,one of the orginizers.
Bruce Morrow signed 5 year deal with Sirius.
Go see John Fogerty live in concert this summer! Rock on, the founder of Creedence Clearwater Revival! The only real deal left from late 60's early 70's rock 'n' roll with any life.
Opening for Mellencamp on this summer's tour. Will embarrass the crap out of the Mellenhead crowd. And doesn't get any radio airplay these days.
So keep on chooglin', all you runners- at age 60 he still cranks out sub-7 minute miles when he decides to go run a ten-miler.
Maybe not so hot for you high-schoolers...but just wait until the arthritis kicks in thirty years from now and see what you can do...if you haven't gained an extra hundred pounds from sitting around pounding a damn keyboard.

Wolfie;
Obviously, you are not of my generation. If you were, you might understand what I meant about these particular DJ's and this oldies station. If you listen to the same station for 30 years, and a lot of the same DJ's are still on the air, it is very easy to feel like they are like friends.
Your other comments were uncalled for, and ridiculous.
"Time for some new friends"? Well, I won't find 'em on JACK FM.
And...I have a life, thank you.
Dick Viondi must be dead and somebody finally was able to get to the microphone and change the station to JACK FM. Dick was always on whenever i turned oldies 104.3 on. He must of never took time off. Yeah but i am really pissed about this too. First it was CD 94.7 that changed to the ZONE now oldies 104.3 is gone those bastards/
Skylon,
I just saw on WNBC-TV this AM that WCBS-FM is getting "Un-Jacked". Apparently NY won't stand for a lousy format.

Thanks for the heads-up Wayne. I heard some thing about PD Holly Levis moving from CBS Jack PD to on air slot at WALK(97.50) and wondered who would be the next PD.
