We're here for a good time, not a long time. I drive this car to work:
Three years salary is the general rule. $18K for the ring is okay if you only make $6K per year.

3 years salary is tehe "old" formula. The new one is your annual salary * (1/2) of your student debt balance dived by three.
Lost it? Right. Probably paid off her bookie or drug dealer with it, or pawned it to bail her dad out of jail.

Whatever you buy make sure it's insured. My wife lost her $10k ring day after I gave it to her (yes I still married her).
So you mean $0?
Because we all went to D1 and had no student loans to pay back.

"if you want to measure a man's worth, check out the rock on his woman's finger" - Stephen A Schwarzman
If you measure someone's worth based on a rock - which is an inanimate object, that pretty much tells us the worth of YOU.
What is the current trend in engagement rings?
My wife and I are from old school conservative families, so I saved for years and got her a nice diamond for around $10k. It was way too much ring at the time, but now it is just about right. Smaller diamond but a high-quality cut. I spent about half of that on a wedding ring from Tiffany's (very dumb) that had diamonds around the outside. On our first anniversary I got her a matching Tiffany's ring (even dumber) as a guarder ring (is that what they're called...?). So about $20k total. She has more bling than most of her friends, many of which who are married to much wealthier men.
She would never say that she didn't like them, but I know she would have been fine with something for $2,500 or less. It's a stupid Catch-22 for both the guy and the girl. It really is no different than a dowry, but for some reason no one wants it to end. It seems like it would be a pretty easy thing for society to capitulate.
We had a lot of income when we got married, so we had money to burn. Now we have three kids and I could never just go spend that much money on something so dumb. Weird how that happens with kids ;)
At the end of the day, you don't want a girl to say yes because of the cost of a ring, and you're actually pretty lucky if you present a ring that gets a negative response because you know what you're getting into. I say go with one that you think is right and hope for the best.
Honestly, the best person to ask is her mother. Not about cost, per se, but about the ring itself. She'll be honest with you and you'll never have to worry about it for as long as you live. Plus, it'll get you bonus points with mom and wife (dad, too!).
Good luck!
When a breakup happens, you do not want to come to the thought of:
"But how could she do that to me? I spent $18000 on her!"
I know it's king of fashionable to spend silly money on jewellery... but seriously, what's the point? It's decoration.

Don't hate if a brother got cash.
Yes - too much for a ring.
If you can't see the problem w/ spending 18k, or are marrying a chick who is into that sort of thing, good luck in life!
If you're lucky enough to have a beautiful woman with which to spend the rest of your love, there's no shame in splurging on her hands.
Why? But why?????

Schwarzman, huh? Good name for...nevermind.
Buy one for 5k and use the money you saved to take her on a nice vacation or two with you. Make your money go further.
