Yes, too much. For $12k you can get a 1 carat diamond of excellent quality on a platinum band and setting. Anything beyond that is just gaudy.

Get going though, its not a short process to get something custom made - i was shocked how long it took to finalize a design and then have it made.
Depends on your income. If you make $1m a year than $18k is pretty cheap. If you make $50k then an $18k ring is way too much. At the end of the day, you know the girl best. Even if I made $1m a day, my wife would kill me if I got her an $18k ring. Other girls are more materialistic.
If you get the diamond from Blue Nile or James Allen and then have a local shop stick it into a band of your choice, you'll save a ton of money.
I don't think many women actually appreciate the finer details of a diamond. Pick a good ring setting and pluck a diamond of adequate size into it.
If she plays acoustic guitar, give her a ring along with that smooth walnut wood.
Whatever you buy make sure it's insured. My wife lost her $10k ring day after I gave it to her (yes I still married her).

Good. It sounds like she will want you to pick out her auto, hobbies, financial portfolio and wardrobe as well. Luckily, the home is already being chosen by you.
Also, I'm currently making 32K annually but should break 40K next year.

You can't put a price on love, but everybody knows that you don't really care about her unless you're willing to spend at least $30k on finger bling. Imagine how humiliated your bride-to-be will be when the other wives mock her cheapskate husband at the next Country Club Christmas Party. Imagine how emasculating it will be to spend less on the love of your life than the annual personal income of the average American.
