all coaches can appear to have a chip on their shoulder...thankfully athelets remind us we are their for them...we all want our programs to be the best...Irv Ray serves on the USATF committee boards to help better the sport and promote running...great to see coaches give back
Good to see Huskie runners wanting to glorify God. What an excellent example of a christian sports figure in head basketball coach Lorenzo Romar who had an unbelievable season. He will have a chance to complete rare feat in winning a national championship with UCLA in 1995 and then coach a team to a national championship.
So is there a non-Christian camp like that for collegiate runners? I mean, it looks great and all, I'm just not Christian and not aspiring to be one...but I am a competitive collegiate runner looking for possible altitude training.

Top American Men in 2004 Meb, Culpepper, Browne are all believers in Jesus Christ and honor God through running.
Then there is the greatest runner in Haile who is a Christian runner. Must be some benefits!

Meb is Muslim and Deena is Jewish.
Wrong, Meb is christian. He is from East Africa which is strongly founded in christian roots along with anaism. Just as you see along with runners from Keyna and Ethiopia. The Muslim influence is basically limited to northern countries of Africa (north of the Sahara) hence their cultural ties are related to SW Asia when grouped geographically and culturally. (which we know as the Middle East)
This is solid we have available altitude camps at Flagstaff and Mammoth Lakes. Ideal places to train.

The camps are not too expensive. Only takes is a little hard work over the summer to afford to go to either camp.

Proof 1: Meb is Christian
Could you tell us more about each of those athletes, starting with the marathon team?
Dan Browne, Alan Culpepper, Meb Keflezighi are on the team. Meb was born and grew up in Eritrea. The family immigrated to the United States, so he's an American citizen now. Browne went to West Point and he's an Army guy. He's from Oregon, and I think this is his first Olympics. The interesting thing about Alan Culpepper is that his wife is also on the Olympic team. Her name is Shayne, and she runs in one of the long running events.
They are trying to use this as a platform to talk about their faith. We try to emphasize that athletes aren't using their faith as a crutch. However they perform, whether it's finishing first or last, they seek to glorify God. Meb said, "I have goals, but God has a plan. Whatever plan he has, whether I finish first place, third or twelfth, I do everything I can to satisfy God."

ATHENS (BP)--Dan Browne missed out on a medal in the 10,000 meters in Athens by finishing 12th, but he remains optimistic about the marathon Aug. 29.
Competing with Browne in the marathon for the United States will be two fellow Christians, Alan Culpepper and Meb Keflezighi.
"I am pleased with my race on Friday night [Aug. 20]," Browne told Baptist Press after the 10,000-meter event. "I gave my best and laid my best sacrifice down on that track."
Browne, in his first Olympics, finished the race in 28 minutes, 14.53 seconds. The gold medal winner, Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia, set an Olympic record with a time of 27:05.10.
Browne, 29 and a 1997 West Point grad, will become the first U.S. Olympian in 32 years to compete in both the marathon and 10,000 meters. He acknowledged he was a long shot in the 10,000 meters and thought going into Athens that the marathon would be his best opportunity for a medal.
"There is going to be pain and joy out there over 26 miles," Browne said. "I am going to try and imagine the pain that Christ went through on his way up to Calvary when I am climbing the hill from mile 13 to mile 20. I wish that I could watch the movie 'The Passion of The Christ' one more time, but my Bible will be helpful as I prepare for this task ahead."
Browne finished third in the Olympic trials in Sacramento in July behind Culpepper, who was first, and Keflezighi. All have been friends since 1998.
Culpepper, 31, told Sports Spectrum, "I don't think I'd be able to do this if not for my faith in Christ."
"When you're somewhat in the public eye, it easily can become about you and what you're accomplishing," Culpepper was quoted as saying in Sports Spectrum's e-mail newsletter Hot Corner Aug. 25. "I very easily can become selfish and about the wrong motivation, whether it's for attention, accolades or money. And that's so fleeting and futile, so for me [my faith] is pivotal. It's the only thing that can keep me grounded and, I feel, keep me motivated to run better, because all those other things are so temporary."
Culpepper's wife, Shayne, is a fellow Olympian who will compete in the 10,000 meters Aug. 27. The duo were members of the 2000 Olympic team in Sydney, Australia. He finished 17th in the first round of the 10,000 meters, while she finished ninth in the first round of the 1,500 meters.
Hot Corner quoted Keflezighi two days earlier as saying, "I have goals, but God has a plan.
"Whatever plan He has, whether I finish in first place, third or 12th ... I do everything I can to satisfy God. We're always a winner in His book -- regardless of how we do."
Keflezighi, 29, moved with his family to the United States in 1987 to escape from their war-torn homeland, Eritrea in East Africa. He is one of 11 children born to his Christian parents.
Keflezighi also was a member of the 2000 Olympic team, finishing 12th in the 10,000-meter finals.
Proof 3 Coached and Trained With Eastern Africans
Of course there is Islamic influence in these countries but not the dominant religion. I coached and trained many eastern africans whom we go to church together. There faith is so real after enduring many hardships. Truly inspiring! That is what makes Meb's story amazing when the family came from Eriteria and how they rest on there christian beliefs to persevere.
Advice: think twice about altitude training.
Most of the experts on altitude training believe the affects only last a few weeks once you come down. Thus by the time your season starts you will see little benefit from this training.
I've known individuals who have tried short term altitude training and all they do is crash and burn or peak early.
It was my understanding that this kind of training should be done long-term to see the benefits.
Elite athletes seem to spend a month at altitude and then transition into there normal training cycle. The Mammoth Lakes camp is 3 weeks long and ends on August 21 which is right before most seasons. That would appear to be a good benefit. How many weeks is needed at altitude?
this worked for rupp...runners should get together to train at altitude, live, and work if necessary for a period of time...granted the rupp's covered the expenses...why are more of sitting idle then getting after it every day...this camp is a working theory in progress as is rupp...that appears to be a proven theory
After Rupp there should be more sponsorship money flowing into distance running. College runners should train together to get a piece of the wealth. Time will tell!
they should read the bible carefully, i'm sure there are more than 30 rules that forbid a christian to attempt this camp.
It is great when we have the two extremes legalists and secularists. The legalists follow the bible to the "t" when actually most laws created were to control people and allow the Jewish elite to have power. For example you can only walk a certain distance to church on Sunday hence no running would be allowed that day because it would be consider work. Tragic! You cannot breathe that way. Faith is suppose to include being pure yet refreshing, freeing yet following general rules, and loving yet more than yourself. Then the secularists who have zero tolerance for religion. It is ironic because they share their view point of no religion loudly. I assume it is a part of their thinking religion interferes with their lifestyle which is everything happens by chance or simply occurs so that there is no true meaning to their life expect existing and living each day without worry for tomorrow which is freeing but missing many great components. I respect those people. The christian faith is supposed to be simple, pure, beautiful, peaceful, freeing, loving which is woven through a great story of humanity. Who knows how exactly God created all of us whether through His hands or a Big Bang, and how life continued to emerge whether through adaptation or possibly through evolution. Who knows how exactly we are suppose to live but the clues show to love others more than ourselves.
