MY POINT is a running publication has a responsibility to ensure they promote the sport their followers and athletes read and to do so with intentionally writing negative remarks that could offend our elite athletes. Especially when they are wrong.
No, we do not have any responsibility whatsoever to worry about not writing negative remarks or offending elite athletes. If you're a journalist and you're letting fear of offending someone influence your analysis, then you're doing it wrong. You shouldn't try to offend people, but if an athlete is offended by our predictions for them, then so be it.
That said, have you even read our multiple articles about Jorgensen? We've given her a ton of praise and props for aiming high. Saying that we don't think her goal (of Olympic gold) is realistic is not offensive. It's our take on the issue based on the facts. And Jorgensen doesn't seem offended at all based on her recent interview (check the Quote of the Day). She says if she saw someone on paper with her PRs she'd give them "zero percent chance" too.
If we were jerks about it and said something like, "Can you believe she thinks she can win Olympic gold? What an idiot." then yeah, that would be bad and this thread would be warranted. But summarizing what we said, it was more like, "We respect Jorgensen for dreaming big, but don't think she has any shot at Olympic gold."
As far as the greater than zero chance argument, you're taking it too literally. This was an informal discussion, not a math exam. Her chances (in our minds) are basically zero so we said zero. If we said "no chance" you'd probably argue that was also not accurate because she has to have some chance. Maybe her chances are more like .1% as another poster said, but that's the same thing as saying zero.
At the end of the day, if the worst thing someone said about you is that they don't think you can win Olympic gold, then you're doing okay in life. There are plenty of legendary runners out there who've never won an Olympic gold. It's kind of a hard thing to do.
